I know you are joking, but really, they didn't know if he had a gun in his ear or not. These guys are trained to expect the worst.
That being said, you can't blame the cops for being a little jumpy.
But on the other hand, does it seem kind of strange that they were in this guy's house with their guns drawn based on nothing more than a single anonymous phone call that they still don't know the origin of?

How did they deal with this before they had tasers?
Just start randomly shooting?

I opened the thread and I wished "let this guy be greased up" simply for the comedic value alone.

Really, in 30 seconds, you have decided to take what is supposed to
be the same action as shooting someone with a gun.

Are you kidding...same thing?

At what point will it someone acting suspicious, so taser them first,
then find out what they are up to?

No...when they don't respond to police commands (in 99% of the cases the guy isnt deaf nor unable to understand english/language of the situation) and police find themselves in very unstable circumstances....then they will use tasers. Not sure why thats a problem at all. I know we hear about these incidents when they go bad, but really, these things are used ALL the time with no long-term reprecussions to the suspect. Its just the media doesnt report them because when they work as they are designed, it doesnt make for a news story.

in many cases yes

While Hurtt was in Phoenix, his department was rocked by statistics showing police were more likely to shoot and kill civilians there than in any other of the nation''s 10 largest cities. After Hurtt bought Tasers for his officers in early 2003, fatal shootings decreased by 31 percent.
Other cities also reported similar results. Miami had no police shootings last year, for the first time in 14 years. Seattle had none for the first time in 15 years

Soon enough, tasers are gonna be the start of WWIII since it's becoming the preferred weapon.

'Cop deaths' are not as tragic as civilian deaths. Police officers are there to protect civilian lives, this means that occasionally a police officer will be killed, they all know this - everyone knows this. IF tasers have the potential to kill, they should not be used as a 'non-lethal' weapon, the argument that 'it might save a cops life' is ridiculous because if the choice is between a cop and a civilian the cop should alway lose.

I get what you're saying, but wow, that is horribly worded.
As for the stats regarding decreases in fatal shootings after the implementation of tasers, I wonder how much of an increase there was in overall use of the weapons? I would think that with the knowledge that they're not supposed to be lethal, police would be more inclined to use the tasers and not show the amount (however little?) of discretion before pulling the trigger.
