I agree and have had similar bad experiences...
My only concern though is that SO many people in North America shop on price mercilessly and then complain about service.
Maybe if people PAID for service they would get service? I think so...
It is not an accident that all of these places fighting to attract internet/flyer savy consumers with every last cent of margin are not able to offer exceptional service. I bet for an extra $100-$200 they can make most any transaction go EXTREMELY smoothly - but when you see an $800 dishwasher at a high-service place (that doesn't necessarily exist) and a $600 dishwasher at the crappy place, which store do you end up at???
When you see the Walmart's, Best Buy's, and Ikea's driving all the little family guys out of the market do you complain?
Of course lots will SAY they would pay extra but that is hindsight talking in my experience.
I don't think it is an accident that there are no/few high service options out there! People won't pay for it and instead expect to have their cake and eat it too!
Interestingly, a lot of the REALLY wealthy people just hire someone to deal with all of this (highend interior designer for example) and are thus paying for the 'service' element that the stores don't offer. That 'luxury' is simply the 'service' we complain we don't get.... but aren't paying for either.
Do we deserve this mythic 1950's style 'service' when we are not willing to pay for it?
