I'm just waiting to see when they will install an ANPR system like they have in England. Set one up on Deerfoot and watch the cash flow in.

Wait a tic. You could use that to find out who is actually using Deerfoot and tax, err, impose a user fee on them. Could work for other Calgary roads too. Then people from out of town who commute here for work can contribute to infrastructure costs. It's so crazy, it just might work...

so what's the threshold on these things? 1km above the limit and you're tagged? i know for instance on 16th ave on the east edge of the city, everyone does between 90-100 in the 90 zone, and i assume that since the 64th St intersection has a red light camera that it'd be getting one of these too. if i get fined for driving through the intersection at 92 km/h while a sheriff car in the left lane passes me doing 105 km/h i'll be mighty pissed

they actually ran a trial of this in Edmonton a year or two ago; they didn't issue tickets, but rather tested out how the system would work. if i recall it was never proposed or instituted because the tolerances they wanted to set it at were way to narrow, ie. it flashed way too often during peak traffic flows

Does anyone know what kind of radar would be in the cams? If it is laser, I dont mind, as I have laser jammers in all my cars, so they cant get a reading. If it is just general radar guns, I may have to find some sort of coating(if it does work) to blind the camera.
What a load of crap, pure cash cow. I can just see it now, a few blocks down from the light, there will be a cop hiding in a bush as well in army gear, to nab those that speed up, so he can fill his quota.

If there's one place I don't want people speeding, is intersections. There is no need to be doing 15+ over the limit through an intersection. That thing turns red, and you have a much harder time stopping than someone doing the limit. I'm sure the threshold would be something like 15 over the limit anyways.

of course its a cash cow..but you have choice of whether or not you want to contribute..the fact is most accidents happen at intersections...Has anyone here been T-Boned by some ass running a light...its amazing how your perception will change..if it makes people think twice that i am all for it
dont speed and dont run red lights and you wont have to worry about the cash cow..its work for me for a long time now..

I don't know if it's still the same, but several years ago I know traditional photo radar was always set to snap at 11km/h over the limit.

Still is, to the best of my knowledge.
If the system works, I have no problem at all with it. If it is a cash cow, it is so only because stupid people are going waaaay to fast.

Hopefully this doesn't give anyone any idea *cough* 4X4 *cough*, but the reason they got rid of the red light cameras here (victoria) and Vancouver was because people were shooting at them and it was costing too much money. They figure it was probably one or a few of the gangs who didn't want cameras in their neighbourhood because it could record other things.

no radar. no new infrastructure.
In fact, I think the accuracy might be even better than radar.

I think it's more like 15, but I guess I could be wrong.

Isn't amber or yellow light sufficient enough as a warning it might turn red? You can go on yellow if you have to. I go through the intersection you mentioned and never have problem with the said red light camera.

I've heard that spraying your license plate with hairspray does the trick. Although, I have never personally tested this theory.

someone should invent an electronic "hide-a-plate" device, you push a button when you get to the intersection and the plate tucks away into the trunk, the pops back out when you press the button again after the intersection
