Some radio personalities I heard this morning said it made them nauseaus. Most of them felt it was "okay."

Spoilers
.

The monster is roughly 50 stories tall, and comes from the ocean depth where it was awakened by excavating. In an interview with J.J. Abrams, the creature is a baby and it will be easy to see that its terrified by its surroundings. Its not a whale like creature as some spoiler say. Its got 4 legs. The front ones are bent backwards at the elbow, it also features a tail. Its head has red lung like breathing bladders on the side, and its eyes are like horses. When the creature is confused or scared the eyes look like the horse eyes from the poor creature in animal house. Its easy to read the emotions.
There are two creatures in this movie. The first is the aforementioned 50 story beast. The second are parasites that it brings up from the ocean with it, and he strips them off when he scratches his back on the building. These second creatures are roughly human sized, multi-legged with a shell. They are about as fast and vicious as a dog, and they can infect humans with their bite.
The film is found in central park after the attack. Basically nothing and noone in New York survivies the attack. What was left alive or standing after the attack by the 50 foot baby, has been killed or eaten or infected by the parasite.
Keep in mind that the creature is a baby or a juvenille. Spoilers have it that there's a set up to a sequel after the credits.
Spoilers end

agreed. i was scarred going by them. But thankfully the Captain was legit enough to make them white.
I cannot wait for that movie. Normally for a movie I would find a date, but no freaking chance. I cannot be distracted for this one!

Just saw it this afternoon.......WOW.....WOW......WOW......BLEW ME AWAY......and I had very big expectations and it didn't let me down. The Monster is pretty cool, but I don't wanna give anything about it away, so I wont.....
Make sure you sit at the back of the theatre, motion sickness may be an issue.

It seems to be getting mixed reviews so far. Most seem to think it is pretty good, but not awesome.

It has a 78% rating right now on rotten tomatoes, which is excellent for a movie of this genre.

I went and saw it today... It definitely didn't live up to my expectations... maybe its because of the first person camcorder experience thing... but I thought it was a pretty crappy movie... I was expecting something like an actually movie instead of just a "documentary sort of thing" it more or less...

I saw it last night. I didn't really have any expectations going into this one, I was just going to wait for the dvd, but my buddy really wanted to go so he dragged me out to see it at 12:01am. I actually liked it though. The filming does get irritating every once in awhile, you want to see what's going on, instead you get a nice lengthy shot of the guys shoes as he is running. That would really be my only real complaint, or at least the only one I can mention without giving away any details from the film. Not the best film ever, or anything like that, but it was entertaining.

Cloverfield aka 1-18-08 aka what a waste of my freaking money.
The "monster" was cool. What a god awful movie otherwise.

The knocks I've heard so far are that the plot is too simple, no character development, and too short (like 80 minutes or something like that). Some don't like the jittery camera either.

Mine started at 7:40. Played about 5 previews and I walked out at 9:07.
Was very disappointed to say the least although I guess I should have checked that before hand to avoid being let down.

Well, I heard the reason that it was that length is because they're actually trying to seem like an actual camcorder recording... so like a 90 minute tape...
But I agree... huge let down.

Just got back from the movie. Despite being pretty much what I expected (city taken by storm, giant monster, army called in), I thought it sucked.
The jittery camera was extremely annoying, the characters weren't likable, and I was just counting down the minutes til it was over. What a let down.

Meh, I liked it. There were a few people actually booing at the end of it, I dont see why though. I thought it was good. I totally understand people complaining about the camera movement, especially once they first start running. A couple of times I wanted to yell "ZOOM OUT!!!". One of the things I really liked about it was the realism, which seems to be a big sticking point for me in movies these days, why I dont know. Of course the plot isnt realistic, but what I mean is, the actors were behaving in a way you'd expect real people to react in this situation(as opposed to a Hollywood, Bruce Willis/Will Smith, etc type who would turn and fight it with a cocky attitude and some zinger one-liners, with a cigar in their mouths). And even though the camera was jittery, I think it added another feel of realism to it, plus I felt the shaky camera helped represent all the chaos around them.
One more thing. Despite all my high expectations, the monster did NOT disappoint. I was very impressed with its appearance. For the first half I was getting mad, thinking we'd never get to see a clear view of it full on. But in the second half, especially near the end, you get some nice, long views. Over-all, dont expect much in terms of character development(it is only a 90-minute, "monster attacking the city" movie after all). But for a good action movie, I recommend it. Just prepare yourself for some Blair Witch-type camerawork.
PS- Just had to add: is it just me, or are movie crowds getting more annoying? I'm seriously finding myself getting uncomfortable during intense, quiet scenes, for fear of some idiots in the crowd yelling/making fart noises with their mouths, etc(which happened during this movie tonight every time such a scene occurred, to which for some reason half the crowd broke out laughing and cheering). I've had terrible luck with movie crowds over the past two years or so(eg people talking throughout, kicking seats, yelling during quiet parts for a laugh, etc), this has become a regular occurance with my movie-going experience. Are people as a whole really getting dumber and more annoying, or am I just getting older and crankier?

I agree with your review and I liked it too, I suppose we just might be in the minority. I will say though, I wasn't totally blown away by the monster. Perhaps it is because they waited so long to show a clear shot of it that I was just, by that point, expecting more...
As for this above part, I suppose I am also getting older and crankier, cause I find myself more and more reluctant to go to the theater. Between paying 4.25 for a small pop and dealing with noisy, inconsiderate little buggers who can't keep their mouths shut or their cell phones off, I just don't want to bother with the whole thing. I would rather wait for the dvd and watch it in my own living room.
