Another good idea is to learn all of the basic chords and barre chords and then start to see if you can recognize patterns in and between songs. For example, the chords to "Say It Ain't So" by Weezer are basically the same as the chords to "Where Is My Mind" by the Pixies, just in a different order (and of course with some other differences). It's a good way to get a good basic understanding of song structure and it's interesting to see the preferences musicians have for certain structures or styles.
