As do you need a driver license from the states... that's what the dealership told him. But i guess that's not true since someone with a time share bought it with an alberta driver license?

Over 5 years ago when vehicles were cheaper in Canada than the US. The Canadian auto dealers were told by the manufacturers to stop selling to US customers. Now the shoe is on the other foot.

Back then I would drive a vehicle for 22,000km then trade it for another one. The guy I leased the trucks from had a buyer lined up in the US.

I plan on buying something for my wife in the next little while. Preferably I'll get a slightly used vehicle from a private seller. Or I could even buy a new one in my brothers name (who is a US resident).

Some new vehicles can't be registered.

Alan Bray bought his 2008 Toyota Avalon in Colorado and saved nearly 10 thousand dollars.

But now he can't take his vehicle much further then his driveway because Toyota's 2008 models aren't listed on the Canadian registrar of imported vehicles.

Manufacturers voluntarily submit the information and until Toyota updates its list, Toyotas purchased in the U.S. can't be registered in Canada.

Bray says the policy unfairly targets consumers looking for a deal.

“I'm very disappointed in Toyota that they would put their profits ahead of doing what is right and fair,” said Bray.

^^ That really sucks, especially with all the media attention the federal finance minister is getting for telling retailers to lower their prices. How about changing your own government rules to allow people to save money.

On the other hand. Buyer beware. The guy should have researched that before he made the purchase.

They were doing it to us when the dollar was the other way. If i sold a car to someone from the US the manufacturer would charge us back about $10k

It isn't the US car dealers. Its the manufacturer, under the pressure from the Canadian car dealers. Who are whining about losing sales to the us dealers. So I guess you should be saying F Canada and its greedy car dealers.

Someone told me today that Transport Canada just changed the rules to make this a lot harder... but he didn't have any details. Has anyone else heard about this?

I was able to *finally* answer my own question... I believe this is the issue that was on the news... It should not effect anyone using the updated list of eligable cars...
