Calculus kicked my ass.
Although stick with it, you'll need it in some very bizarre places.
Advanced microeconomics was the last time I needed it - quasi-convex/quasi-concave ARRRGGHH.
But I did well on my GMAT, so it can't require that much calculus

basically with the chain rule all you are doing is differentiating outside the brackets then differentiating within the brackets then multiplying the two together. if that helps any

I aced 2 of 3 AMAT (calculus) classes i took in university, i love it.
Way easier then the force method, or dynamics *shudder*

Force methods, dynamics and stress levels are pretty cool when you apply it. One of my friends is taking a grad coarse on stress levels of structures and materials (similar to how Micheal Scofield puts a hole through that wall in Prison break), and her project is to model the stress analysis of a human spine.

That would be neat, way better then the garbage questions they give us

a root is just to the power of 1/the root, ex. square root is the same as to the power of 1/2
so, the derivative of (x-1)^(1/2) is just (1/2)*[(x-1)^(-1/2)]*(1) (derivative of outside * derivative of inside)
(1/2)*(x-1)^(-1/2) == 1/(2*[(x-1)^(1/2)])

No. The GMAT is an aptitude test. The only usefulness studying for such a test has is to get used to the format and be prepared mentally - the subject matter is not really something that you can learn in a short period of time. Really, the test is to demonstrate that you're not brain dead.
I wrote two old GMATs to study and I think that was one too many.

Im a third year engineering student and that question confused me.
The first 2 years of calculus courses kicked my ass (**Thank GOD Engineering is the only faculty that accepts D's for your degree**) But now that I am past that the calculus required for our problems is quite simple, so i wouldn't get to worked up about it.\
Aren't you guys happy ill be designing bridges and what not??

Wow, it's been 9 years since I took Calculus in University and I completely forget everything. Probably the beer. Good luck, I used to be good at it too.

Wow, I think I had to take 3 or 4 calculus courses in university, and I did really good at all of them except the last one, and I can't do a single problem in this thread. It makes me both sad and happy. Sad I can't remember anything, but happy I've obviously lived a nice, full, calculus free life.

I was going to help out the original poster, but for some reason my Math 33 textbooks don't go into this much detail...

'kay, it was an accidental post... are we really reviving the thread?
My story... Math 31, was half vectors/half calculus. I completely aced vectors and completely bombed calculus (really, basically failed calculus), but had a good enough grade to help get pre-acceptance to Engineering at U of C.(poor research there, didn't realize that basically every single class in first-year engineering is a calculus with different name. Calculus as it applies to Chemistry, Physics, Geology, Materials...) AMAT 207 and 209, D and D+ respectively, on may way to a Dean's holiday... Then went to MRC to get back into school. Math 251, 253, 351, and 353 all A's and got 100% on the final in 353. But then went and got a Psych degree and then a Law degree and basically remember no calculus other than the theory of how it all works...
I went from being phobic, to accomplished, back to completely lost...
I love reading about math, but somehow calculus just never did it for me. Now statistics, matrices, topology. number theory, chaos and complexity, those are interesting...
