I fully agree with everything you said. I'm glad that the Islamic Supreme Council of Canada is condemning the idea. Hopefully their words are more than just posturing.

did not know that. i'm surprised someone hasn't tried to fight that so they didn't have to have a picture either. i'm not sure if there is a difference b/w sects from america or canada or even how they differ from the amish. i know the amish (at least the ones here) don't drive, so it hasn't probably been an issue. i'll have to do some research on that....but now off to pick up the monsters from school -- carpool is ALWAYS an adventure.

I remember reading a story where a few moderate Muslim leaders stated that nowhere in the Qu'ran does it say that a woman must cover her face. Rather, it is a construct of the male dominated leadership. The entire point of a burka is to dehumanize a woman. She becomes property, not a person.

Strikes me as rather ironic that people will get so angry at the bigotry of one group, such to the point that they will defend the bigotry of another.

And lets face it, if we all went in to vote wearing balaclavas, refusing to remove them, we will not be handed our ballot.
I think there can be a reasonable compromise. A woman could still wear her burka, and identify herself by fingerprints or DNA.

You must mean like the mormon community in BC, or the Hudderites, how about Chinatown in our city? Communities built around religion is nothing new and i don't see what the problem is. Bountiful being an exception to that.

There was opposition to it, but the Alberta court ruled in favour of the Hudderites.

So long as they would allow me to wear a burka head dress (or face paint with a green wig) when voting. I have no problem with the law. If they dont allow me but do allow someone based on "religious freedoms" then I have a problem with it.

Well if you think about it, it's somewhat true. While I don't condone segregation by any means, Chinatown is a similar idea, and fully sanctioned by the City. I think the difference here might be location. With Chinatown, it's right in the heart (and eyes) of the city, and is, while it's own subculture, fully integrated into the the core. There are many types of people who walk through the area everyday, and which is completely surrounded by many different neighbourhoods and areas, each with their own flavor to them. The propsoed Muslim village is way out in the 'burbs which is far more secluded, and thus, portrays a picture of inward, segregated feelings.

Being Chinese is a religion? I guess I can count the rice and duck feet in my fridge as being kosher then.

Fixed. Nothing else to contribute to the thread - the spelling mistake was driving me insane.

The Islamic Supreme Council of Canada is strongly condemning the idea because it undermines integration efforts.
The Council also says no group should create ghettos.
Great to see there's conflict within their ranks.

I would go trick or treating there every year.

I know. But the idea of rice and duck feet being kosher was just amusing to me. I couldn't pass that up

There was a story a few years ago about a gypsy who tried to fly in the US with a fake ID. Gypsy's don't associate identification with given first names or carried over family names, so he just took a friend's ID card and intended to use it to get on the plane. Obviously the airport security took a different view and tackled the man to the ground. He was charged and is currently still in jail I believe.

The defense in the case attempted to explain to the judge it was all a result of naive realism...But from what I understood the stance they took backfired on them (In the US melting pot I'm not sure how the defense team figured it would work).
