Where do you live that you took that pic?
In the country, southwest of Calgary.

Bears are coming out of the mountains because of the poor berry crop this year, a result of the cool spring. They typically follow river valleys.

The cubs pretty much destroyed a few of my apple trees. They're too heavy for the branches to support. I put some old plastic tubing around the trunks and the branches and it was hilarious to listen to the cubs scratching and bawling in futility trying to get up . . . . then they ripped the tubing off and I was the one crying some more as branches busted.

The momma was circling nearby as I took some pictures.

In the last two months, we've also had a badger in our yard and a porcupine, which quilled one of my dogs at 6:30 on a Sunday morning. Imagine walking through a few acres of tall grass delibertately looking for a badger!! Had to make sure it was gone before I let the dogs loose. When the bears were around, two cougars were spotted crossing a field near our house as well.

Wild kingdom lately.

Like Wookie, I also run longer distances but I've been using some lonely country roads out west, running down the middle since they're used infrequently, a beautiful and lonely retreat. However, the cougar sightings reminded me just how lonely it might be in the wrong circumstances!!!

Holy cow, be careful out there, I would seriously get the creeps running on lonely roads by myself in these circumstances.

The dogs and I were walking down a closed highway near Blue Rock last winter when the people trailing me on the road said a cougar came off a cliff and crossed the road "not 20 feet behind you."

Never saw a thing . . . . so I call it my "apparent cougar encounter."

Too bad as I had the perfect lense on my camera for that kind of in-close encounter.

What sort of distances have you been running? You've done a few marathons IIRC?

That 'cougar encounter' would creep me out quite a bit more had your dogs not been with you. I'm sure the cougar would have been a bit cautious as I'd think your dogs would put up a pretty valiant battle against it.

No it's not.

Black bears are best.

A black bear got into the Rockyview hospital a month back or so.

I'm sure the dogs would be an attraction for a cougar, not a repellant. Sadly.

There were about 30 big horn sheep on a ridge above us when we were walking by. Maybe my dogs looked easier to take on.

I ran three half-marathons through the summer and a 10 km. Going to Monterrey next month for the Big Sur half-marathon . . . . an excuse to go somewhere but it will be a fun run through the city and out by Pebble Beach. Taking in a Sharks game as well.

I did a marathon a long time ago but I'm not at that level of fanaticism at the moment.

Yourself?

The scene of the apparent cougar encounter below. Interestingly, on another walk, we did come across a guy diligently jogging down here. We also had a bear encounter on this road two years ago:

A cougar attacked my dad's colt near Millarville a few years ago. The colt survived, but has nasty scars on his haunches. They get Black Bears in the yard all the time.

Remember if you choose to run - you don't have to run out the bear - you just have to out run whoever you are with.

If need be kick your hiking mate in the knee before you take off.

When I read this thread title I wondered who "Warning Bear" was.

Is that kind of like Sexual Harassment Panda?
