Cold is a sore throat, little cough and a runny nose that last about a week at the most and usually when you have it you can go about your day as normal maybe a little more tired.

I think a full blown flu lasts about 3 weeks.. gets worse for the first week... plateaus for a few days and then slowly you feel better. Its terrible.. you are weak and can barely work, high fever and all of the symptoms of a cold but 10x worse. I usually get the flu once a year. When I worked at the health region I got my flu shots for free so I got them.. and still got the flu but I found I got over it quicker.

Usually after the shot I get a bit of a fever and a tickle in my throat but nowhere close to a full flu. Haven't got in an a couple years though.
