This was an incredible image and generated an outpouring of support for the war when it was originally shot. This photo was originally released back in Janurary of 2005, following a truck bombing of a combat outpost in Mosul (note: a combat position in a heavily populated civilian area). SSGT Wesley Holt, Sgt Joseph Martin and Maj Mark Beiger (pictured) all received Silver Stars for their efforts during the Dec. 29, 2004. I do have to question how and why it is being recycled almost three years later?

I agree with rube's position. The cognizant dissonance we display when discussing war is disturbing. Dropping a "smart" bomb from 30,000 feet, into a civilian area, is some how heroic, regardless of the collateral damage, yet striking at a military post up close and very personal, with the same collateral damage, is cowardly. Bill Maher was very correct in his comments, which got him fired from ABC, we have things a little backward about bravery and heroics.

You always have to spoil things by bringing facts into the mix...

Seriously, I feel a little dumb for not checking into that. It doesn't change the fact that it's a terrible, moving image, though.

Thanks for posting the picture, sitting in Western Canada its hard to appreciate everything going on in other parts of the world.
First off, I have to say that is a very very sad picture.

However, I think its fair and actually perfer arguments based on logic rather then emotions. Unfortunatly, a young child was a victim of war, and this is the realism of it. There are thousands of children dying in Africat, et al, we are just more sympathetic now, because we see a nessasary evil inflicting pain on a child - however, we are less sympathetic to a child in pain in Africa, because we feel that isn't inflicted by a evil - however, we do nothing but pour sorrows on an internet msg board rather then take action.

Just saying... a life is a life... sad picture, but there's a bigger picture involved to.

I stumbled upon the image while reading Fark .com. In fact a grown man like me was in tears when I saw it. An innocent child's life snuffed out too early
