Lifetime Suspension
|
I'm shedding a tear for you Reg. I've been down that road a couple times in the past three years and it's heart breaking to spend the last night with your best friend, knowing tomorrow you will hold them for the last time as the life drains from their eyes. I hope things go well for you and you take it better than I did when I put mine down. It's a hard day, but its probably the best thing for you and your dog.

Sorry to hear that Reggie. Two years ago I put my beloved Husky down after having had him for 14 years. It was the second time I had had to do it and it wasn't any easier than the first. I thought I was handling it fairly well, but when I actually went in with my dog, I just lost it and broke down. The vet was extremely nice to me though and so were a few of the people that just happened to be in the waiting room at the time. People knew what was going on. They were really nice and understanding and were really trying to comfort me.
Like Ken said though, don't be afraid to cry and let it out. It's a hard situation with which to deal.

All I can get

Dogs are kind of unique in that they have no shame (they'll lick themselves in full view and sniff bums) yet they have dignity. Rather unique creatures.
My guy lets puppies crawl all over him and bite his ears and such with nary a whimper. Kids would saddle up on him and ride him like a pony.
He was a well-rounded dog.
Thanks everyone for your thoughts.

There are times when a dog reinforces the 'mans best friend' belief.
Sad to hear about this Reg.
All the best.

The Rainbow Bridge
By the edge of a woods, at the foot of a hill,
Is a lush, green meadow where time stands still.
Where the friends of man and woman do run,
When their time on earth is over and done.
For here, between this world and the next,
Is a place where each beloved creature finds rest.
On this golden land, they wait and they play,
Till the Rainbow Bridge they cross over one day.
No more do they suffer, in pain or in sadness,
For here they are whole, their lives filled with gladness.
Their limbs are restored, their health renewed,
Their bodies have healed, with strength imbued.
They romp through the grass, without even a care,
Until one day they start, and sniff at the air.
All ears prick forward, eyes dart front and back,
Then all of a sudden, one breaks from the pack.
For just at that instant, their eyes have met;
Together again, both person and pet.
So they run to each other, these friends from long past,
The time of their parting is over at last.
The sadness they felt while they were apart,
Has turned into joy once more in each heart.
They embrace with a love that will last forever,
And then, side-by-side, they cross over together.
Don't know who wrote it, but it gets me teary anytime I read it.

Condolences Reggie. It's the price of having a pet, having to say goodbye to a few of them over the years, but a tough job. The bloody critters are worth it though.

I'm so sorry, Reg. Two years ago I had to put Rufus, my rabbit, down and I was a total mess. I know what you're going through and I know how much it hurts. You're doing the right thing and there are people who wouldn't be able to do it because of their own comfort zone. Take pride in the fact that if your dog understood everything that is happening that it would appreciate the fact that you're trying to save it some pain.

Sorry to hear, Reggie. As a dog person, I know there isn't a harder decision to make, but it sounds like in this case it's definitely the right one.
Take care.

Sorry to hear that Reg. About 4 years ago we had to put our dog down that we had for 14 years it was a tough day.
I have had my black lab for about 3 months now and I can't imagine not having him around already.

Sorry to hear that Reg. It has been many years since I had to put down my black lab (D'arcy).
Tough pill to swallow, but for the best.

Yeah, I'm another dog lover sorry to hear about this. Tough descision to be sure as you are really attached to them, but at a certain point you have to realize what the dog loves and how good his quality of life is. Dog's are some type of different creature though as they never stay mad at you if you treat them good 50% of the time, and they'll stick with you no matter what.

Sorry to hear that Reggie. My own turns 11 this December, so I know that day approaches for me also. Had a small dog that I grew up with live to 14, yet it was still a very rough day.
Good luck to you tomorrow.

Always hard to lose a pet, nothing wrong with being upset.
I had to put one of my little guys down a while ago, he was lying there on the vet's table and they gave him the needle in his front leg, just slowly fell asleep.
There I was, big "tough" guy with tattoos crying like a baby.

Damn it, this thread made me tear up.
My little guy is getting old. The sad part is he's out here in Kamloops while I'm back in Calgary, so I won't get to spend the time with him when it comes. I don't want that day to ever happen...that furry little means the world to me
