That's the thing about Student Union groups, they are generally radically left leaning people who are anti-war for the sake of being anti-war and see the military as nothing more than a killing machine.
The military is not for me but i have a few friends who are reserves and love it. It's provided them with a lot of opportunities they would have otherwise not had.

Thinking about it more, I'd be a little insulted if I went to the U of Vic. The whole purpose of higher learning institutions should be to expose students all choices and points of view. If Columbia University can be confident enough to have the president of Iran speak there without it corrupting students, then I'm sure the Canadian military at a Canadian university can't make students do anything that they wouldn't be inclined to do anyway.
It's an insult to their intelligence really. Few people join the military on whim.
If it were hard recruiting, then that would be annoying, but if it's just a career fair where interested students approach them, then I don't see the harm.

My sisters 2 kids attend HS in Denver. That school banned the US Military from recruiting on campus.
Personaly I have no problem with what the UVic is doing. The military can always set up a recruiting office near the site of the university.

This is not true.
This may be true in some departments, but I'm pretty sure the university as a whole is about 60/40.
Not that I see any of it, my major is 95/5 the other way.

My major is definitely 95/5... with girls being the majority. Which sucks for me, as a girl!
Anyways, I don't know whether or not I agree with the decision made by the SS, but I gotta say... as a UVic student, I don't think the military would be too successful recruiting at UVic anyways. Most of the students aren't really the military type anyways.

People who go to University have llikely never worked a day in their life and are currently living off their parents dime so they can afford to spend time getting high and dreaming about a perfect Earth Utopia. Also its in BC - the draft dodging capital of Canada so who gives a damn (and by damn I mean, well you know).
Hopefully the Canadian Miliatry will rent a place just off campus to skirt the SU.
I do find it peculiar that the Student Union has so much power on provincial goverment property that they can discriminate against a perfectly legal buisness opportunity.

Well... strangely enough, the STUDENTS UNION actually has complete say in what happens in the STUDENTS UNION BUILDING, a building where every business is opperated by the STUDENTS UNION. The SUB is where the SU provides businesses and services to students. Making the decision to not let the military advertise or recruit there is well within their jurisdiction, and it is certainly not "discrimination". So instead of casting dispersions on the good people of BC, and university students in general, consider that this decision might have been taken with the same weight as all choices as to who is allowed to do business or advertise in the SUB.

I'd like a little more info on what you mean Lanny, if its a personal shot, I can live with it, I don't have a choice. If its a shot at military personal, I have a few issues with it.

Nothing against the military, Captain. I respect the job they do and the courage it takes to make a commitment like the boys and girls do. They get killed and maimed so some politician can talk tough. The deserve all the recognition they get, and then some.
I also find Azure to be the biggest chicken hawk this side of Washington. If you believe so strongly in something, do something about it. Azure is still at the age where he would be the perfect recruit, so he should put up and enlist. Come Azure, you're a "dually". Show what a patriot you are and protect that "right to vote" you claim to have by enlisting in the US military. They have really good signing bonuses right now!

What the hell are you talking about Lanny?
Seriously, get a clue, for once.
You have absolutely no idea what is going on in my life.
Ridiculous.

I actually agree with Azure on this one, and I'm nowhere near signing up for the military. That being said, it's a legitimate career choice, and the Canadian military is a bit different than the US.
Just because i'm not going to "sign up" myself, doesn't mean I can't think banning them from university recruitment is a stupid idea.

I'm a uvic student (and an alum... long story) and the Student Union's decision is pretty stupid IMO. Especially when you learn that the position was decided by a single vote after a small special interest group applied pressure to the Board. Students are adults and should be allowed to make decisions for themselves, however one gets used to uber-liberals who lack any shred of common sense out here on the Left Coast, not to mention the idiocy of the Student Union @ Uvic.
And the girl-to-guy ratio at uvic is about 3-1, wheras the rabbit-to-human ratio is around 4-3.

Personally I don't have any strong convictions one way or another about this story. It the military is dumb enough to think a bunch of university kids, who tend to be left-leaning and feeling their oats, are a prime recruitment target then that's their business. And I doubt these university kids will be hoodwinked by a slick recruiter. So it's pretty much a tempest in a tea cup. The move smacks of poltical grandstanding by the UVic SS however, which is never a good image to project by an organization ... not if that organization wants to be taken seriously.

UVic is out of line on this one for sure. This is setting a precedent for banning any organization that the schools administration disagrees with. Who's next? Sony? Haliburton?
Likely a misguided notion that our military is somehow killing innocents. I've found that letting University students decide policy like this is like getting kindergarten kids to plan their lessons. It usually takes about 3 years outside of school for a person to get a real grip on reality.
