Please give specifics... as what you like to do in each town and any advice of where to stay or shop or what to do would be appreciated. Im sure a lot of Albertans on hehre would love to hear any advice anyone can offer.
So, where did you end up going? I was going to go to Great Falls, but when deciding what to shop for, I've found some pretty key stores dont seem to be there.

Maybe I should go to Spokane instead? Maybe Missoula?

Does anyone know forsure that they dont force Albertans to pay the ID sales tax? That can add up quickly on big ticket items.

Any other thoughts from anyone else?

Also the headquarters of one of the biggest American White Supremacist groups.

I recall going to Sandpoint very often as a kid, my parents would always drive us down there for some reason. Always remembered that enclosed wooden bridge/shopping center and how it enthralled me as a kid. It would probably depress me these days. Also liked the Pea Soup in some shady restaurant with American Iced Tea.

Wow, you just rekindled a memory that was buried deep, deep within the recesses of my brain. Cool.

Did you ever go to the big flea market there? As a child, it didn't seem odd to me at all that sweaty, fat, mustachioed guys in Harley t-shirts and Stars-and-Stripes bandanas had entire arsenals of firearms readily available for sale.

If you want shopping....Spokane. There isn't anywhere in Montana where you'll find the same selection of stores you can get in Spokane. You have to drive past Cranbrook about 80km West on hiway 3 towards Creston and IIRC you turn off at Yahk to go to the border crossing which is Kingsgate and than it's about 3 hours from there to Spokane.

If you tell the retailers in Spokane that you are from Alberta, do they waive the sales tax for you?

Yes, it's dropped right at the till. Some ask for ID; most don't.
