i used to do that all the time when i worked at 7-11. it was a pain in the ass to deal with all the small change, so i always just rounded up. figured the small loss the company suffered from that was offset by those who didn't want their change back

Many stores now seem to have that as policy. Same as if youre supposed to get 3 cents or 4 cents back theyll just give you a nickel.

When this happens to me, I take only the bills place them in my wallet and put my wallet back in my pocket. Then I take the change. If they get smart with me and plop the change on the counter, I pick up each coin one at a time.

I totally agree with this. I'm working retail right now as I go through college, and the amount of people that do this drive me nuts. Or even worse, is when they have a ton of change (like say 5 dollars worth of dimes or something) and they throw it on the lowest part of the counter. It's a grocery store and we have a check writing platform. Why can't you put it there, where I can count it easily and slide it off into my hand instead of having to pick up 50 freaking dimes?!?

Also, the people that keep their money bunched up like a wad of trash or folded 50 times that hand it to you like that, or just throw it on the counter right next to my open hand. Grrr.
