Get the iPod touch. I realize that the compact size is what you were looking for, but it's so cool.

I don't want to use Apple's way of sorting my music, I already have a directory structure set up that sorts it the way *I* want. Interfaces like iTunes make me want to punch the screen, I don't care that Mac users don't care about directories 'cause I'M NOT USING A FREAKIN' MAC!
I don't WANT to sort my music by genre or artist or any of that crap, I want to sort it by mood. Can I do that in iTunes - no, because that would mean the program couldn't hold my hand to protect me from the scary, scary computer. Screw that, I'd rather type arcane batch files commands in the DOS window than use that kiddy-toy piece of garbage.
Man, I feel better now. Thanks!

What would make me a lot happier with Itunes is if they had a sort option for filename rather than artist / album / name of song whatever. A lot of songs I put on the Ipod are Chinese songs, and those are such a pain to have sorted properly.

XML is not magical. If you go and move files around it cant read your mind. The Chinese thing probably speaks more towards the applications language services though and I have zero knowledge of how it works.
Metatags and xml are the future. Ignoring your file structure is an odd workflow that even I have trouble working with. Realistically, you should be able to work without ever touching (Vista)Windows Explorer/(OS X.4)Finder with the advent of indexed files and live searching.
That being said, iTunes is a pig on Windows.
Calling it unfriendly is not really fair. Trying to use iTunes in a manner for which it was not intended and then saying it sucks is unfair as well. It is what it is.
You can call me an Apple Fanboy if you want but I have had numerous Apple products and every time I had an issue with one, it was fixed at no cost to me with a minimum of hassle whether it was under warranty or not.

Meh, maybe my computer literacy isn't that high, so I don't really know how to work around old habits. All I'm saying is I personally don't really like how itunes works. Maybe I'll get used to it in the future or something, but as of right now I find it is an annoying program to work with.

You can do this, but you need to enable the column for displaying the file name.

I wasn't aware of any program that sorted by mood. Unless you are meaning something else.

I like to be able to manage music on multiple platforms. So I put sharepod on my iPod the moment I got it.
Drag and drop!
I keep all my music on an External HDD so I don't have a library for iTunes to use.
The only thing I use iTunes for is playing directly from my iPod.
For the money, it's hard to beat the iPod, but if you're an audiophile, then it should be avoided if at all possible. I find that the EQ settings on the iPod are nothing but crap. Any time EQ is turned on, my music clips, and it's not my headphones, because even my studio headphones clip.

Count me in with those suggesting that you should get the ipod simply because you're buying for your mom, and she'll probably appreciate it more because it's an ipod and is more recognizable, with more stuff to accessorize it. If she's not really into the technology she's probably not going to appreciate the slight benefit of going with a Zen (if there is a benefit), but she'll definitely lose out on the appreciation of the more recognized product.

I like to run with my MP3 player. I have the creative "Nomad".
It has 2 parts - the USB drive, and the battery.
It has 3 buttons. One to turn on and off, one forward, one reverse.
You plug it into your USB drive and drag your MP3's onto it. It plays them in the order you put them on.
It costs less than $50.
It's perfect as far as I am concerned. Cheap, mine has seen constant use for 4 years without flaw, simple to change songs, easy to interface with a computer. No cables either.
You can even get a rubber case and velcro armband for jogging with it.

EDIT - The only downside of mine (which is 4 years old mind you, there are probably much newer models) is that it is 128MB. That's around 30 songs. Which is longer than I can run anyway.

I just ordered an IPod 80 gb. I like my Creative, but it is only 8GB, and they only seem to go up to 30 gb right now.

One app that users iPod users may be interested in is Floola.
http://www.floola.com/modules/wiwimod/
It is an app that is installed one your iPod and will allow you to access your iPod songs on any Windows/Mac/Linux machine regardless of what that machine has installed.

I was just never happy with iTunes. I had heard how great it was for so long that, when I finally tried it, I was underwhelmed.
My Nano is OK, but I'm much happier with my Zen.
