Ok, spoke with the VC service place in town and they said they had a lot of this last year. He said the best way is to use a solvent (he specifically said nail polish remover) to get under the plastic and remove it, then clean the stainless steel with the solvent, then soap and water, then normal stainless steel cleaner.
So the laquer thinner is the right track, it's a bit stronger than nail polish remover but is still ok for the stainless steel.
