"Idiots" in the left lane who are a danger to those around them are that way because the guys who want to do 140 on a freeway are driving like morons in a flury of road rage because somebody is doing the speed limit.
Slower traffic keep right. Slower than the speed limit keep right. You learn that in drivers ed boys and gals. I do not like it when people drive beside cars and what not but I also realise it is completely legal and because it is I hold my tongue and my road rage in check.

They have a couple, iirc. Definitely on the way out of town, but I also recall seeing a couple such signs around 16th ave.

Oh, and speaking of idiots driving too fast. On the drive back from Lethbridge today, I saw three police cars that had pulled over one of those supercar racing groups. Something tells me that three Lambourghinis travelling together on a back highway didn't get together by coincidence.

ha! go to toronto and drive on the 401 and tell me if the left lane isn't the fast lane.
on any road where there are sustained high speeds and lots of overpasses, ie you don't need to turn left with all exits to the right, then it is generally accepted that the left lane is the "fast lane" middle lane would be medium speed and right lane slow lane or exit lane. on crowchild i believe it goes like 100, 90, 80.
i would argue that this includes crowchild from bearspaw/stoney all the way to 24th ave then from memorial to the end of crowchild, pretty much all of deerfoot. parts of memorial and 16th ave. the more the road is congested though the less these rules apply smaller 2 lane roads and even crowchild during peak hours is sometimes just too busy to try and stay to the right.
i believe this isn't the first thread that debated speeders and personally feel free to speed within reason. 100kph in an 80 zone isn't rediculous and neither is 120 on deerfoot. any faster than that and your speed becomes a hazard IMO because you are just going so much faster than the other cars that it becomes unsafe. anywhere between 110 and 140 on the highway is ok IMO.
as a matter of courtesy people should not go 100kph on deerfoot in the left lane. you CAN do it but it doesn't mean you are not a jerk for doing it. speeders do exist and intentionally trying to slow them up will not make the roads safer because then they will likely weave through traffic. as a matter of courtesy all drivers should attempt to stay to the right as often as possible.
and to the people debating the cop giving a ticket for going the speed limit in the left lane the original poster is correct. however unlikely that it would ever happen a cop could technically give out a ticket to a car if he was impeding traffic even if everyone else is speeding. you must maintain a safe speed so if everyone is doing say 100kph on crowchild and you are doing 80kph you could get a ticket. even though everyone else are the speeders. of course this is a highly unlikely situation and the law is generally used for like tractors driving down deerfoot going 60kph.

I dont remember learning the "fast", "medium" and "slow" lane theory in driving school.
I understand that it's curteous to leave the left lane clear for passing in the city, but it's not the law.

@ 4X4:
Listen, there are lots of people on this board who will not agree with us. They think that driving at whatever speed you feel like is immoral. How dare you drive one kmph over!!!! They are the ones who think it's funny to block traffic because they don't feel safe going faster.
I restrained myself in the other thread and in this one I won't. If you want to drive at or below the speed limit do not screw up anyone else's driving because you want to do that. Mind your own God damn business and stay OUT of the lane you KNOW you don't want to be in. It makes everyone happier if you don't want to be rushed. If you go in the left lane I (and others like me) will tailgate you because you deserve it, then don't come to calgarypuck and say that we are wrong for doing so. You were just as wrong for instigating the problem in the first place.
Just leave me alone and I won't bother you- just follow the old saying: lead follow or get out of the way. MOST of you should get out of the way. Others can follow. And very few (notibly 4X4 and REDVAN) can lead. END OF DISCUSSION PLEASE AND THANKS.

You're fogetting the fact that those who speed don't give a fiddlers about the rest of the drivers on the road. They think they own the left lane and feel they can drive at whatever speed they want. Probably the same ones that whine and snivel about the photo radar on Deerfoot.
In fact i'd love to see more photo radar. Maybe that will get the speeders to slow down. Frankly they're a danger to the rest of us when they weave in and out traffic because someone is doing the speed limit.

i don't remember saying law in my post. key words in there are generally accepted. its like an unwritten rule or a common curtesy that everyone sort of knows about.

Exactly. Which is why it doesn't make sense for those wanna-be cops to try to slow down everyone else. They can't give the speeders a ticket, and the only thing that'll make them slow down is getting nabbed by the real cops.
In other words, get out of my way, I have places to go.

This is funny. The same rural d-bags who do 140 on the Deerfoot cant drive downtown since their small town didnt have traffic lights. Traffic in downtown calgary is like a funeral procession. The d-bags in their 4X4s cant figure out the one-ways and 4 lanes of traffic going one way. Yet get the same tool with his cummins diesel on the deerfoot and hes a hero.

I think there can be a balance between the left and the right lane....but your little rant here is pathetic. You are going to tailgate someone and risk a major accident because you think you have a right to drive over the speed limit?

"If someone wants to pass you, the safest thing to do is to move out of their way" was in driving school though.

Has anyone here driven in Germany? The krauts have down, no passing on the left. Period.
If you're in the left lane and not driving fast enough you will see flashing headlights in your rearview while they bear down at 200kms an hour. You get the hell out of the way. I know, different country and no speed limit but I covered 600km that day on a BMW touring bike and have never felt safer.

If 4x4 and redvan are not those types of guys then fine but sometimes guys in the left lane are passing as well, just not at 150 kph.

Ontario has the right idea for slowing down speeders...
http://www.am770chqr.com/station/blo....cfm?bid=15571
We touched on this topic a couple of months ago, but it's now about to become the Law in Ontario instead of the proposal it was then. Premier Dalton McGuinty announced this week that, effective September 30, drivers caught speeding 50 km/h or more over the speed limit will be treated as street racers. That means police can issue roadside 7-day license suspensions and impound vehicles for a week. If convicted, drivers could face fines ranging from $2,000 to $10,000. According to the premier, speeders "...will face the extreme stiff penalties applied to street racers...you're looking at major cost and major inconveience..."

Wow, that's a great plan.
Next work on the cell phone morons, nothing worse than a city full of cars being driven with one hand on the wheel and barely any attention.

They should just have mandatory re-testing for drivers who got their drivers license in a town of less than 1,000.
