Come on you guys Micheal Moore doesn't shoot documentaries, he shoots reality movies. The people, the places he goes, the people he interviews, how he interviews them are all created to tell his story as opposed to exploring certain issues centered around a topic kinda like a reality TV show. Please don't call them documentaries. They are not.

When The Levees Broke may be the most powerful documentary I've seen.

Some really good docs mentioned in this thread. Fog of war is excellent. Why we Fight is another really good one.
Ken Burns Baseball is one of my all time faves. I really like his Civil War documentary as well.

I'm like Jiri and have a real love for documentaries. Here's a list of ones that I would recommend, and then my top three faves.
Control Room... the story of al Jazeera and their work as the Middle Eastern CNN. Really eye opening and gives a great perspective of what another culture thinks of us and our media.
The Hunting of the President... the true story behind the Clinton "scandals" and the golden age of smear journalism.
Iraq for Sale... exposes the money being made and who is earning it.
Jazz... Ken Burns is awesome!
Journey of Man... a brilliant film about the origins of modern man, and how we are all from one seed.
Orwell Rolls in His Grave... explores the New American culture of doublespeak and lies.
Outfoxed... a scathing look at Fox News and their seedy side. Biased, but hits a homerun.
Shut Up and Sing... the story of the Dixie Chicks after their comments about Bush, but more importantly, the colusive nature of the media and radio in the United States.
The Power of Nightmares... this is geo-political documentary series that will leave you shaking your head about the scam that is international politics and terrorism.
Weapons of Mass Deception... two wars going on in Iraq. One involving the search for WMDs and the other involving the cohersion of the media in covering the war itself.
With God on Our Side... a look at George W. Bush's reasons for finding God, and how the evangelical right keep him in business.
Top Three...
The Corporation... a Canadian production that is long, but worth the watch. It really beats the crap out of Big Busine$$.
Who Killed the Electric Car... mandatory viewing for anyone who gives a crap about our environment and those who think Big Business and Government is looking out for our better interests. Beats the crap out of the argument of "build it, and they will come".
Why We Fight... STUNNING!!! AWESOME!!! TwoBIG thumbs up to the movie makers, and one BIG middle finger to the industrial military complex.

I love docs as well.
Some of my favourites are:
BBC: History of WW2.
The World at War: 13th year anniversary addition.
10 days the unexpectedly changed America
The Great Global Warming Swindle
Aftermath: Unanswered questions from 9/11
9/11
And....a lot of the Biographies and Modern Marvels documentaries that have aired on A&E.

This one is possibly the funniest movie ever made! Chomsky, Naomi Klien, and Maude Barlow all contributing to the same movie. Pure comedic genius!

I'm big fan of Ken Burns and his brother's documentaries such as the Civil War, New York, Baseball and Jazz. Very much looking forward to "War" this fall which apparently gives WWll the Burn's treatment.

I didn't care much for The Corporation - but the other two have been on my zip list for months - I might have to buck up and just rent them at Blockbuster - been looking forward to seeing both.
A few more come to mind
Kurt and Courtney - on Cobain and by the same together there is a film on Biggie and Tupac that is very good - the name escapes me now of course.
There is also one called The Grizzly Project (I think) that is about a dude that builds a bad-ass suit so he can go fight a Grizzly Bear. Less about bears and more about a man's journey into obsession. Very good.

Trinity And Beyond: The Atomic Bomb Movie is great. I love watching the nukes get progessively bigger and bigger. It's interesting because it's a fearsome topic, but you can't help but be awed as the bombs get bigger and better. It sheds some light, I think, on the psychology behind an arms race, as higher yields become an obsession for the people who work on them, and I think being somewhat in awe of the nukes is part of the experience they intended when you watch it.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching Super Size Me. I, like everyone else apparently, was incredibly surprised by the results he received. Shot well, great story arc.
Trinity is also cool. Great review, sclitheroe.
I love every episode of PBS' Nature series.
Planet Earth may be best boxset of anything, ever.

And yet I don't love that series. I don't get it.
