I actually have successfully gotten my company to switch away from using UPS for anything because of their customer service and ridiculous broker fees.

Also you can't say that they are aligned when someone above posted DHL only charging $7 and the last item I got from Fedex they only charged me a $12 brokerage fee on a $900 item.
i dont work for UPS, they are actually a competitor. I have been a senior level manager in the industry for over 15 years though.

Depends on the mode of transit as well. if that FDX shipment came by ground, the charge is cheaper than by air. it is justified because the cost of facility and oeprations are much cheaper off airport. anything coming in at an airport costs more and takes longer to clear. its just the way the industry is set up.

i would suggest to not use UPS either, I just took issue with the comment it was a scam. its not, its a charge for a service provided.

Fair enough, "scam" insinuates something illegal which it's not. Rip off is a more appropriate term for what they are doing, no matter how they try to justify it, especially when their competition is charging a fraction of their price for the exact same thing.

I was told that by our DHL rep about 4 or 5 years ago when he quoted me shipping costs...he couldn't go below the UPS cost because he said the parent company would be infringing on them. He also knew what we were paying through UPS, so I'm assuming there's a connection there somewhere.

could it be you were thinking of TNT or OCS? they both use UPS into the USA, but I assure you that DHL does not own UPS.
