They should just let the Trek franchise die for about 5 years and let it be re-energized down the road.
With the exception of First Contact all of the next gen movies have been utter garbage. Voyager was pretty lousy and rife with techno-babble that wasn't needed, and Enterprise was a series that was long on promise, and incredibly short of delivery, and really long on stupid.
I don't see how this movie is going to be anything more then marketable young actors seeing thier careers crash and burn as they go through another badly written script that fumbles through the obvious "Ventral Shields are down Captain", and "Transporters are off line Captain", and the old classic "If we vent the negative warp plasma through the hiedenburg compensators and shunt them through a negative polarity pulse using the main deflector array we should be able to stop time long enough to beam aboard the enemy ship and deactivate the insideous backwards counting bomb display before its deadly cargo of irridium rips sub space field rips throughout the Alpha quandrant preventing ships from going to warp for all eternity"

I think its a pretty fair bet to say plot recycling, attempting to knock off TOS and all that ridiculous technobabble did Star Trek in sometime after 1994. TNG was getting bad for it, but Voyager took it to new levels. Enterprise, with a couple exceptions here and there (and mostly in the fourth season) was horribly written. However, from 1995 to when Enterprise went under in 2005(?), it was the same couple of morons in charge. They are now gone after nearly deep-sixing an incredibly lucrative franchise.
I have faith that Abrams will do it right... starting with the 60s themed Star Trek posters and t-shirts, to the casting of Nimoy (and most likely Shatner too)
