so what exactly makes it so special? i grew up playing first person shooters from the very beginning, with Wolfenstein and Doom, and i've played many of them that i thought were much better than Halo. i've just never understood the hype it receives

Actually, Bungie was making games for the Apple. Some of the games were classics.
I won't debate your taste in games. Historically speaking though...
Halo was a system seller for the first xbox. Microsoft ecstatic with sales.
Halo 2 was the proof that Xbox Live was the real deal. Microsoft ecstatic with sales.
Halo 3. Will be a system seller for the 360. Microsoft will be ecstatic...if they aren't already with the presales.
I find the story compelling, in fact more compelling than either wolfenstein, doom, or duke nukem. its easy to play...difficult to be an expert.
i enjoyed the run and gun of Doom 3, but for me half life 1 and 2 were way better experiences. I can't wait for the new Half Life.
so I really have no answer to halo yay or nay for folks. i think its an awesome game and i can't wait for the third one.
let me ask this a different way. which is the better driving series...Need for Speed, Project Gotham, Forza, TOCA, Colin McRae Driving, Test Drive, or my personal fave, the entire Burnout series? They are all driving, and yet each offers something different.
For me, same with Halo. an FPS, but very well done.
