That cell looks like it did make it over the mountains. Its due west of Cochrane and (if it keeps its current path) is headed for Olds.

Edit: Well, it just died so I guess it didnt make it over.

Me and a friend just got back from Canmore on a motorbike ride. The storm was huge over Canmore with a lot of lightning, we seemed to stay on the edge of it on the way back. I think it's travelling more to the north of us. There's definetly a feeling in the air and I think were in for something overnight and into tomorrow.

thank you. kevan can espouse all the scientific mumbo jumbo that his liberal mind is filled with, but there is only one true way to predict these kinds of storms, and that's from the gut

Here it comes. Nice light show high up in the clouds. According to that radar this system is pretty good sized. It's also getting cooler which is nice. It's been a hot and muggy night with no breeze.

Yeah, I was just about to post that it looks like we are gonna get some cooling off. Thankfully.

edit: Cool, I can see the SE edge of the storm right outside my place on Heritage. Some good lightning to the south and for sure. Looks like the heart of the strom will stay to our west though. And good work from EC, no watch in effect here.

The lightning to west is amazing. It's just non stop.

Edit: Here in the NW it's starting to rain and it's really windy. Too bad I have close my windows now cause it's so breezy. Just when things were cooling off inside.

I think you can open em up. Doenst look like we're gonna get much rain. There is another wave behind this one but it looks pretty weak.

Very intense storm over Turner Valley the last half hour. which is why I'm posting at 5am

Pretty much all night lightning has been going off every 1 or 2 seconds.

So this morning I wake up and on 660 News, David Spence says thunder storms over Bragg Creek are going to hit the NW part of Calgary in the next little while. Then I turn on Global Morning and Todd Gallant says Calgary is clear and won't be getting anything.

Well, I just looked outside and it's POURING right now!

Okay, that didn't last very long. Looks like it's going to be one of those crazy weather days in Calgary.

In all honesty, I find the broadcaster's versions of the forecast to be complete crap. Spence is pretty knowledgeable though, and usually isn't too bad. That Tod Gallant character....well...no comment. For the closest 1-5 day, EC is about as good as it gets.

If you look at my site on the forecast page, you'll notice the forecast of a program I'm using. It's a VERY detailed program with a pretty steep learning curve. I havn't really got my head around it much yet, but just playing with it on auto mode, it spits up some pretty close forecasts. At least as well as Toddsy Gallant can do!

I'm pretty sure woke up in Edgemont around 5am to hail and a torrential downpour of rain.

That was awesome last night. Saw the lightning to the west driving home at 1000-1030, then at 0130 it was crazy. By far the most consistent lightning I've ever seen. This is Discovery. I thought maybe there were some hits on the hill behind our house, one tree snapped in half behind our house but that could have been the wind. Seemed like it was all lightning, but then the thunder came into play. Recieved hail and rain too. Another sleepless night tonight?

Lets do a poll to see if we get one today. So far this morning in Edmonton it's overcast and seems pretty humid for this time of day.

Lol, nice poll.

Nice, loud, jet plane exlposion over my place at 6:15 this morning, but that was it. I'm pretty sure that one thunderclap set off every car alarm in Kingsland though.

We're on the cusp of something good here in St.Albert. Between the fighter jets flying around for the opening of Capital Ex, and the thunder booms, it's quite noisy here this morning. The most recent pass by the jet here was pretty low. Just a bit of rain starting to fall, could be quite interesting.

I voted "yes" just because I'd rather go drinking after work than play softball.

Here is the expected weather for 6pm. Notice the text near Edmonton.

http://www.flightplanning.navcanada....dwx_012-e.html

So, right not, its looking like its all gonna go down a bit later in the afternoon. 4 or 5ish. And it looking like Red Deer north will have the most activity. But, until the front gets here we wont know for sure.

From the 1:00 pm report...

GUIDANCE CONTINUES TO SUGGEST FRONTAL BOUNDARY FOR 00Z FM JUST WEST
EDMONTON TO CALGARY THEN BULGING SEWD THRU ONEFOUR. IT IS BEGINNING
TO LUK LIKE THIS CUD SERVE AS THE TRIGGER ZONE AS ELY UPSLOPE FLOW AGAINST FOOTHILLS HAS NOT YET MATERIALIZED..

Im trying to figure it all out here but from that I think it will mean that things wont be starting in the foothills and coming at us (Calgary/RD/Edmonton). They might start near us and move North or East. Regardless, it is on and severe weather will happen today.

A developing north south frontal zone from just west of Edmonton south to west of Red Deer has begun to pool moist unstable air. It is expected that thunderstorms could begin to trigger near this boundary after 3 PM and well into the evening hours. Storms which develop are expected to move northeastwards. It is possible this watch may be extended southeastwards towards Medicine Hat as the day progresses.
