Perhaps a little overdramatic, but sage advice none the less.
Like it or leave it, it's Calgary. It's NOT going to change. Chillax and explore it, revel in it, or hide in your house. But don't bring us, and espeically the visitors down.

The only part of Stampede that appeals to me is the rodeo. I grew up on a farm so I love animals and I do find it enjoyable to watch them performing, animal rights activists be damned.
I've only actually ever been to it once but used to watch the finals on CBC every year growing up. I may go with some friends today, does anyone know what time the daily rodeo events start so I know when I should aim to get down there?

Exactly, for years my parents have taken their vacation during Stampede. They aren't too fond of the increased congestion, so they pack up and get out to the parks and do some camping. They love it, while everyone is flocking to Calgary, they are leaving it.

I do hide out until all the inane ******** leaves town. It's preferable for everyone involved I figure.

again, i do miss Calgary, always had a lot of fun during stampede. Loved the chucks, rodeo, and even the somewhat cheesy grandstand show. Downtown was a blast, and the parade is still one of the best I've been too.
Not much into country music, but still managed to enjoy the entertainment during those 10 days.
We usually had people visit from out of town, during that time, so it was always fun to bring them around town during Stampede week.

This year - not so much - for reasons I'm not getting into. To much cash, I'm training for something right now and...
As well it's always a lot of money. I'll go to cowboys a few nights and drink my face off and waste a few hundred bucks. Usually a great time. Actually I think I'm going to go Thursday Saturday of next week. Since the cowboys tent will be gone forever soon and I pretty much grew up in Cowboys

I'm always good for stampede about once every three or four years. I like it, but having lived here my entire life, I've been to it enough that it isn't really that special anymore.

why do people always write "yahoo"? it's on signs and banners everywhere, but I never actually hear anyone say it. I've always said "yee-haw". isn't that what cowboys say? I've never understood that and it bugs me.
this year will probably be the first time that I don't go down to the grounds. I like throwin on the cowboy hat once a year though, and of course the stampede breakfasts are great. I guess after living here for 8 or 9 years I've become somewhat indifferent.

My cowboy hat is too small for my dome. My oversized melon begins to throb after about 45 minutes.
Hey, question. I'm going to Nashville North at some point this week. There's no dress code in there, correct? i.e., will I get in if I'm not wearing a cowboy hat or western-type apparel?

I didn't see a dress code, but I did see a 2 ID requirement... news to me only showing up with one.

I like the Stampede. It's an exciting time of the year in town. The city takes on a whole different personality. It's almost like everyone comes together during these 10 days. Calgary doesn't have anything else that even comes close to having the same atmosphere that the Stampede brings about.
The only thing I don't like about the Stampede is people that complain about the Stampede. You don't like it? That's fine, but I don't want to hear about it (not referring to the people in this thread, but people I encounter). Stay in your house for a week and do whatever it is you do the other 355 days a year. God forbid something changes for 10 days a year, and interrupts your boring routine. For example the people that hate Stampede because they can't get around as easily or find parking. I hate to say it, but you have a boring life if the most important thing to you is drive in to work and parking. Sorry to interrupt the monotony that is your life.

Stampede = Money Grab....
think about that the next time you line up to pay 20 bucks just to enter a bar and then pay 7 - 8 dollars for a freakin domestic beer. That reality hit me again on the Ranchmans Patio at about 12:35 pm friday.
On the Stampede grounds its just as bad...
On average a ride is 5 dollars or credits a shot for a ride that lasts 30 seconds if you are lucky.
I had my kids down there yesterday for family day. Even after getting in before 9 for free I still spent about 300 dollars on rides, food and stuff.
I am not cheap but I do like to get a little better value and quality for my money.
This week I'll only be going to sponsored events from some of our vendors.
A couple of hours a day and then back to work.
Most years I avoid the grounds all together.

There was a period of about 25 consecutive years, by my recollection, where one pizza bus was in the same place on the Midway grounds . . . . something changed with it about three or four years ago.
And that's the way it is . . . . . after a while, it seems to be if you've seen one Stampede, you've seen them all.

I hear ya! As mentioned, I hate anything to do with a western theme or the overrated Stampede. However, I do like it for the reason it is the only time this city has people walking around, vibrant and a party type atmosphere downtown, via midway, nightclubs, etc. If for not Stampede, the city would be dead year round. Like i said, i would gladly trade the 10 days for a year round vibrant atmosphere(nightlife), ala, Montreal, Toronto, etc.
Pretty much the only big thing, event that happens in this city throughout the year. Its our big event and here to stay, so might as well enjoy it, no matter how mundane it seems to be.

Hate the country music, hate the cowboy boots, hate the crowds.
But...
Love to drink, love Nashville North, love the cowgirls.
