Back on topic. I didn't spend much time in Montreal, at lunch on the way from Ottawa to New York, but it was a beautiful city from what we say. The only downside was the drivers. I don't think I made many friends on the roads.

May I recommend 'La Fin Du Monde' from Quebec. 9% and one of the strongest tasting brews this side of the Atlantic.

Just an FYI- you can buy that beer here. For those of you who don't speak French, the name means "The end of the world." And holy crap, are they right! First time I had it I was at a house party. Close enough to my house that I could walk home if I got too drunk. I had 4 Kokanee then my buddy had me try 2 of those. Not sure what else is in it, but I needed to get somebody to drive me home because I was pretty sure I couldn't walk the 5 blocks.
But a really nice beer otherwise; as long as you aren't fond of always wearing your pants.

I am aware, Drunk Skunk lives in QC and thus may not have heard of it. Bottlescrew Bill's sells it here as part of their 'passport.' I've had the brew many a time after a tough work week.

Thought I'd bring back this thread and have it updated for the colder weather. Wanted to see if any of the posters here could recommend a good club or lounge to go to on a Saturday night. I'm heading there this weekend and going to the Montreal/Boston game and wanted something to do afterwards. Catch is I'll be by myself. Hoping to hit Old Montreal and do some shopping during the day Saturday and Sunday. Is there any other "must see" areas? I'm not going to be there for very long, but I'm hoping to pack a lot in. Thanks in advance!

Oh yeah! The best smoked meat sandwiches ever! Gotta have a Cott's black cherry cola to drink with it too!
Those sandwiches are so good that going to montreal without eating at schwartz's should be illegal!
Notre dame is absolutly beautiful as well.

I'm not much of a club guy myself, but there are a tonne of them on St. Laurent -- Tokyo, Orchid and The Lodge are all around the same area. Pretty popular with the English crowd. Most of the French crowd frequent the clubs on St. Denis.

Goto arts & crafts night at the C0ck & Bull. It's a regular pub but on Mondays or something there are free themed art supplies and you drink and make stuff...like clay, paintings, collages, puppets, etc. whatever your twisted heart desires. Good with groups with ladyfriends.
Last time I was there, this resulted from the drinks
As for clubs, depends what kind of music you like, they seemed to be quite different and changed according to the night too. Just walk up and down St. Laurent or Crescent street.

Stick to St Lawrence blvd for bars. There is pretty good choice. I liked the Lodge as mentioned above. Crescent st is more for 16 yr olds and American Tourists.
I have slipped into John Sleemans pub on Peel while the GF is shopping a few times. Bar is older than Jesus but its pretty neat to see.

I know that Club Super Sexe has been mentioned a few times. The place "I heard of" was called The Downtown club or something very similar on St. Catharines.
We didn't learn of its allure until the last night that we were in town...although "my friend told me" that you could spend a whole week there and see the best that Mtl has to offer!

Going to MTL - Suggestions?
Hello CP
First time ever starting a thread, but there seems to be quite the brain trust here so I figure I could ask for some advice
I'm planning on spending a couple of days in Montréal with my girlfriend during the Christmas time. Does anyone have any good recommendations on places to stay? While I'm not a student anymore, I'm not loaded either, so preferably someplace not too expensive, and near sites of interest. We haven’t decided if we’re going to drive or fly from Toronto, so I’m not sure if we’ll have the car while we are there.
She’s been there a bunch of time, so it’s nothing really special for her. However, of me, I plan on finding myself a good place to get a traditional Montreal Smoke meat sandwich, Poutine, and bagels (local and traditional food is something I always like to experience when I travel). Are there things I can’t miss for my first time in Montreal?
Thanks CP

I'd recommend staying on the fringes of downtown if budget is an issue. It's not as nice the heart of downtown, but it'll be a bit cheaper and its a short walk to almost everything. If you want to stay on the west side of it (mostly English), try looking west of Guy (like Hotel du Fort for example). If you want to stay east (mostly French) try looking around St. Denis/Ontario (known as the Latin quarter).
As for the food, this is a passion of mine as well. Here's some recommendations
Smoked meat - Schwartz's. Its the quintessential Montreal smoke meat place. A classic place every tourist should visit.
Bagels - Fairmount or St. Viateur (they're a block from each other). St. Viateur has a cafe where you can get the bagels with smoked salmon, etc. Fairmount is bagels only.
Poutine - You can get it anywhere. I can't recommend a particular place, since I'm not a big fan myself.
Burgers - La Paryse. Another Montreal classic. The 'special' burger is served with bacon and cream cheese
Sandwiches - Santropol. Yet another Montreal classic. Everything is homemade and really tasty.
French Bisto style -- L'Express (moderatly expensive, but good) or Pelerin Magellan (not quite as good but half the price of L'Express).
Beer -- my favourite is Dieu du Ciel, but there are a million good microbreweries in Montreal.
I could prattle on forever, so I'll stop now. Hope this helps. Feel free to PM me if you have any specific questions.

Just scored two AWESOME seats to the MON/CGY game on the 9th, and am pumped as hell!
I'm going to memorize everything in this thread so I can make the most of our little three day midweek holiday in MTL.
If anyone has any additional tips/advice/info I'd love to hear it. We are going to get our hotel on Priceline shortly, something downtown, and by the recent winning bids I've seen at betterbidding.com, there's an excellent chance it will be Le Sheraton. Which would be great, I think.
Some additional things we are interested in checking out:
-Casinos
-Some place to score some cheap beer/wine/spirits to being back to ON
-Sushi places
-Places to go/places to eat before and after the hockey game
-Street market/flea market/farmer's market
-The underground city
Thanks!

I was at the Habs / Sabres game this past weekend in the front row right under the goal light (behind Carey Price in the 1st and 3rd periods). It was a riot, and I was on T.V. numerous times during the highlights. Good times!
While you're there, take an extended walk through Saint Laurent / Saint Denis / Rachelle / Mont Royal streets.....You won't be disappointed. The are far more interesting than St. Catherine's street and you can find some great deals.
One of the best poutine places is on Rue de Mentana / Rachelle street.
Don't forget to visit Schwartz's on Saint Laurent. Best Montreal smoked meat in town!

Yeah, those sandwiches are so good, it should be illegal to visit Montreal without eating there!
You gotta go there!
