Actually, Ikea utilizes a global supplier base that doesn't necessarily focus on one region (ie China per se). Quite an interesting value and logistics chain they're built, and it's been the subject of many a business case. Although a lot of stuff comes from China for Ikea, there is actually a significant part coming from Eastern European countries.
Next time you're in the self-serve warehouse, look at the little white labels, they all list the place of manufacture for the item and they're all quite different.
Although I have to say, everytime I build furniture from them I wonder at how much can be done with the power of 1 inch wooden dowels! That's the foundation for all their stuff I swear! It's like some sort of Swedish Grand Unification Theory! Forget Einstein, we've got wooden dowels! )

Yup. Ikea never has more than one store in any city.

They've had two in Toronto for a couple of years now. New one's on the Queensway.

Yeah someone who is willing to stand in line for $5000 is obviously trailer trash

Yeah but how about those hot dogs and pour it yourself ice cream at the end of the maze. I have this theory that there is some kind of psychological experiment going on there to see how fast it takes us men to get through the maze to the cheeze at the end, all the tacky stuff they sell is just a guise.

The one in the NE can easily be managed in less than 5 minutes, even less if you take the shortcuts.

Well the woman in line should stop wasting her time. The earliest you can "officially" line up for the contest in Nov 9 at noon. Anyone in line at that time gets "entered" in the contest and if they stay in line until the opening of the store on the 10th a draw is made for the winner. Bathroom breaks are supplied of course.

Oh for sure, guys could zip through the current NE Ikea in 5 minutes. But like Tron says, bring someone of the female gender and all bets are off....
Sorry fellas, better get used to marking off afternoons when you get "brought" to the Ikea from now on:
"This store promises a whole new shopping experience for our customers,"said Smith. Built on 22 acres of commercial land, the two-story shopping and display area alone will be over 115,000 square feet (bigger than 6 NHL hockey rinks). It will feature 3 full home settings (the current store has one home setting now) and 50 room/kitchen settings (up from 19 settings currently). The store's product range will grow significantly from 6,800 products today to IKEA's full range of more than 11,000 items. There will also be three times more parking with over 1400 spaces exclusive to IKEA, in contrast to the 440 shared spaces the store has today. Other expansions include twice as many cash lanes with 24 in total, and a new 350-seat restaurant.

My wife got "family and friends of employees" tcikets to shop before the actual grand opening. As I understand, each employee was able to hand out twenty of them. We went last night. What a friggin zoo. Man, if it's that crazy before it actually opens, and you dont handle crowds well, you better feign illness or dream up something, cuz that place is gonna be nuts for the first few weeks after grand opening.
HUGE store, same maze style concept. A lot of products. Your wife/girlfiend is bound to never come out empty handed!
I thought to my self while I was there that if you were single, it might be a great place to meet women. Lots of obviously single gals loading up on Swedish gear.
Seemed to attract a whole lot of men that seek other men as well, if that's what your into.
Hope I said that correctly.

They have been liquidating their stock in the NE store for a couple weeks now. It is most definitely being shut down.

Well that's a shame, I used to work there and each weekend it was jam packed.
I don't see how there can't be two thriving Ikeas in the same city

haha, I can see it now.
Some guy with poofy hair, thick mustache and a sleeveless t lurking around the store offering his service to any shopping-crazed damsel that appears to be alone... "may I heelp you with de slutspurt (final push) ovar de farthinder (speedbump)?"

So has there been any reports from the new IKEA? I saw on the news this morning that people were lined up outside overnight shivering in the cold.

I am heading there right away, I had no idea this was the grand opening.
I'm back in town for a couple days and Ikea is on the agenda, I don't want to deal with a zoo though.
I will file a report later tonight.

And both existed before York, North York, Etobicoke, etc were all folded into the megacity plan.
That all said, even if Ikea chose to make one exception, that doesnt change the fact that their overall strategy is no more than one store per city.
