I would really go with the golf TDI.
If you do a lot of driving, you'll get nearly identical mileage (real life, laboratory driving conditions are not street conditions), cheaper fuel, and an overall lower carbon imprint (if you care, the hybrids require far more energy to produce).
New diesels also don't stink like they used to, nor are they as loud.

I'm thinking of getting a Hybrid and found this old thread through the search. Some good information in here. Has anything changed in the last 9 months?

Not sure if anybody else has heard anything like that. It is possible since I don't recall where I saw it; mine may not be a credible source.

Not true Ken,we use the same jaws for a hybrid.

With my job I do a LOT of driving, so I am looking at hybrids, in particular the Camry Hybrid.
Does anyone have any experience with this car, or any other hybrids? Are they truly worth the extra $$ or would I be better off getting a regular Accord/Camry instead?
I will be leasing it, so resale value isn't important to me...
|
I just tried this decision in the last two months. The main issue for leasing is the finance rate. For me to go with the Civic (which has very similar performance for much better pricing) the lease rate on the hybrid was much, much higher because its a hybrid.
This happened at Toyota as well. I really did like the Camry with blue-tooth and the push button ignition...and the general bells and whistles. Its a nice car. While the car only costs about $1,000 after the government rebates though, the lease rate is much higher, so your monthly payments are much, much higher than a normal Camry.
I really wanted the hybrid. In the end I went with a full, full, load Civic though. It costs me over $100 per month cheaper and the difference is a mere 5 mpg.

Thats only because I had to rent a vehichle with a deisel engine last week....In time it will revert back to the old way.
I notice in the US that the price difference from Deisel to gas is more significant than in Canada. In Oroville Washington a gallon of unleaded is 355.9 and a gallon of Diesel is 425.9. In terms of price per litre regular unleaded is 0.949 and the Deisel is 113.5 for a price difference of about 18.6 cents per litre. In Osoyoos 1.214 for gas and Diesel is 1.299 only 8.5 cents difference.

Diesel is regularly more expensive in the winter time than in the summer. My co-worker (who knows a little bit about a shockingly large number of things) tells me that it's due to the use of heating oil in the winter time.

Depends where you go.. I fill my diesel truck at the flying J and its still cheaper than regular by 4 or 5 cents. The reason for the increased cost is the fire at Shells refinery outside edmonton, their deisel unit is running at reduced capacity.
Diesel is definately the way to go, my truck gets the equivelant gas mileage of a V6 gas engine.

Very few people use heating oil in alberta, the cost is greatly attributed to the anti-gelling agents they put in it. But also the refinery outage I aluded to in my post

If you truly want to save gas you have to get either the prius or civic.
The accord and camry gives you v6 power at 4 cylinder costs.
Right now I'm paying $36 to fill it up to get 650kms in the city. Too bad i have to pay $70 to get 450kms for my TSX. hehe.

Worst looking cars on the market today.
If you want someone to actually buy a hybrid made by your company, perhaps you should tell your design team to include things like Wheel wells, which have been in style for about 50 years. I'd be embarrassed to drive that hunk of trash around. It is about time that companies are getting on board with making some of their 'normal' models hybrids instead of making something only a tacky ###### would drive.
