For example when I did some research on the Ford Escape, the 2001-2004 model years were not recomended due to all the mechanical problems. However 2005 was recomended.

Currently I drive a 2004 Pontiac Grand Am that does the trick. I recently had it in for a $1000 repair... the first I have put any money into it since buying it beyond the oil and gas.

I am not happy about having to pay $1000 in repairs for a less than 4 year old car, HOWEVER, I did buy it used so who knows how it was treated before I got it. Also, if you only put $1000 ever 4 years, that is pretty decent.

I have had lots of Chrysler products over the years, and they tend to be very reliable. Lately they have become more of a mid-upper market car so I am not sure that is in your price range, but Dodge still makes some cheaper cars that might work out.

As for imports, prepare to pay more. My girlfriend's family loves Toyota and Honda, and their cars are worth more because of it, but it's all relative... and if you're going to drive it into the ground I would suggest a domestic.

My wife's 2002 Sunfire with the 2.2 Ecotec was a very good car...good power, awesome gas mileage and absolutely reliable. We didn't have a second's trouble with it...that is until we sold it to her sister, who promptly crashed it and wrote it off. She crashed it hard and blew both airbags - she came away with not even a scratch. Even in death it was a good car.
