I remember reading an article about a child that was severly injured in a fire, and since the child was under a year old, they made it into a girl.

IIRC, they've tried that and it just doesn't work as his gender is already defined in his mind. Changing him into a girl would just make him hate his life.

My understanding, and remember I got this from an article is that a baby is unaware of its gender, so the therapy revolved around both daily hormone treatments, and the acceptance from the parents of the childs new sex, and that its raised as a girl.

Where the confusion lies with the baby is that its basically sterile, will never go through true puberty except for the parts that can be dictated by hormone treatments.
