I grew up on the border. We used to bring back 12 beer per person tax free. Didn't matter how short of time you were across. Then one day a jerk at customs decided to tax us, because the tax free limit was 11 beer per person. So after that we would just drink one before crossing. Depends who you get at customs.

Beer is so cheap down there. Stock up and pay the duty. Its no big deal. I usually smuggle a couple 24 packs at a time. But I have crossed so many times I know when I can and when I can't get away with it. The best trick is buying hard liquer at the Canadian Duty Free when you head south. Last time I crossed, it was $20 for 2 40's of rye (Gibsons). Then just smuggle it back into Canada.

If you do go down to Babb. Head to the Babb bar for supper. You won't get a better steak anywhere, guaranteed. It will cost like $25 US. But it will be 20 oz minimum. Best steak I have ever had in my life.

If you golf be sure to bring your clubs. The course there is cheap, very fun and the scenery is awesome. I highly recommend it.

If you want a good hike that is really fun and gets you away from the hordes of people try taking the drive out to Red Rock Canyon. As you go over the rollercoaster hills and wicked bends you'll find a lot of little creeks that you pass over. Stop at one called "Horseshoe Creek" or "Horsefly Creek" (can't remember but it's the horse one). Then just head north up the creek. Make sure to wear shorts and sandals (and make sure it's a nice day) because it's a hike along a creek and in some area's you have to wade. It's nice because on long weekends the typical hikes (bears hump, red rock canyon) get very crowded.

As for shops you can find some cool stuff at Tamarak mall and of course on main street. The candy store and ice cream store are a must on a hot day. Pat's (the gas station) is pretty neat too and they rent out the canopy bike-type things that are pretty neat to take on a tour of the town with.

Definitely check out Cameron falls and there are hikes on both sides. On the right it is basically just a tiny hike to a look-out point and on the left is a more involved one. There is also a lot of trails and interpretive centers that line the banks of the creek towards waterton lake. If you hike from Cameron falls along the creek to the lake and stay on the South side through the camp ground there is a decent beach (no sand though) and more trails that head east along the lake.

There is tons to do in Waterton and one of the best things to do when you get there is to stop at the Ranger station and get a trail map and find out about recent bear sightings. It's on the right hand side of the road right after the entrance to the Prince of Whales hotel (which you have to drive up to and get the overview of the townsite and some pictures)

They actually changed the 48-hour exemption to $400 in March

Quote:

When you return to Canada, you may qualify for a personal exemption. Personal exemptions allow you to bring goods of a certain value into the country without paying the regular duties. If you have been outside Canada for:
  • 24 hours or more, you can bring in CAN$50 worth of goods free of duty and tax;
  • 48 hours or more, you can bring in CAN$400 worth of goods free of duty and tax;
  • 7 days or more, you can bring in CAN$750 worth of goods free of duty and tax.

Do you have a website to verify that?

I am also looking at hitting the US border for some Coors Original at duty free.
So how was it? We went up thursday night and took the boat out friday. The weather on friday was unbelievable. Then on Saturday we went for a drive to red rock canyon and then stopped by the buffalo paddock and went home. We had drywallers coming so we had to cut it a bit short.

Are you really instructing people to break the law? Is it worth the risk of getting caught smuggling goods to save a few dollars on your booze?

I'm not sure it really is:
Under the Excise Act, the penalty for unlawfully importing spirits ranges from $500.00 to $10,000.00 plus the confiscation of the smuggled goods and the potential loss of the vehicle used to transport the goods. In some cases, imprisonment of no more than 12 months may apply.

You can get a fine, lose your car, and possibly even go to jail. To save yourself $20.
