Right now I golf alot at Nanton and it sounds like Beaver Damn is very similar to the course I play on. I gave up on crowded city courses and their 5 1/2 to 6 hour rounds of golf. Cripes at Nanton you can play 18 in 3 1/2 to 4 hours.
Fox Hollow? A guy needs extra health insurance to play on that course. The way they designed that course i'm suprised someone hasn't been killed from errent golf balls flying over from adjacent fairways.

Its only a 9-holer, and may not be the craziest of challenges....but there is a golf course in Rosebud, about an hour drive east of Calgary. Rosebud is insanely small (50ish people, if that) but also has a terrific dinner theatre out there. As well, you are starting to get near drumheller, so you could always make a fun little weekened out of it. The golf was (is still likely) pretty cheap, and you can camp as well...so it coudl be done cheap if you wanted to. But it also has bed and breakfasts at the lower end all the way up to a higher end inn....so you could have your picks of things.
Or I should say there definately was...I would phone/double check first as that has been at least a good couple of years since I have gone there. But I don't think too many golf course just up and walk a way...

There's a course at crossfield, more of a links course. 18 holes, can't remember the price, but it was pretty cheap. The name has something to do with siding.

If you like playing a 3/4 length, 9 hole course, sure, it's fine.

They're particularly ugly temporary greens though.

I have to agree with this, Nanton is a great place to play. The drive is just a little over an hour maybe an hour and a half. In side the city limits I think the Elks is the best course. It is semi-private so you may have to call and find out the procedure to get a non-member tee time there, great course though.

I played Beaver Dam on Sunday, and I have to agree, it starts out pretty unimpressive and then just gets wild. Great deal for $40. They could spend a bit more time getting their greens in better shape, but the year is still early. I'm not sure, but it looked like playing a round may have taken a bit of time for some people. The 4 guys in front of us, let us through, on about # 5, and then we didn't have anyone behind or in front of us the rest of the way, even played a few holes 2X. But it looked like things were really starting to pile up. When we were doing 17 and 18, we noticed there were usually 2 groups per tee box waiting, on the holes we could see on the back 9.
Anyway, I'd definitely recommend it.

Yikes!
Quiet guys! Beaverdam is by far the most fun, challenging, low price, close to city courses Calgary has. Stop telling people about it! I havent played on a city course in probably 3 years due to the fact you CAN NEVER GET A TEE TIME. I used to work a job that allowed me some time to hit the phones right at 6am when the 'auto booking system' starts...and I still could not get through. By the time I finally did...2 hours later... everything was booked. Rediculous. So please...stop telling people about Beaverdam. Its doing just fine...thanks.

Wasn't Beaverdam made by a farmer who couldn't make money on his crops? I played it a few years ago, and yeah it was cheap, but the fairways were brutal and the greens were in really odd places. The #10 600 yard par 5 was REALLY laid out strangely, and the back nine was almost submerged in the valley. It was $28 at the time, so I guess you get what you pay for though.
