i just find it so fitting that the player who has an online term named after him happens to have one of the funniest names in hockey. it would have never been the same if you had to say "Smith'd" for a repeat topic

Yeah I too like the "so what's a fata" thread every 6 months or so. Makes me feel like I've been around the board a while. I suppose it's been over 3 years, but it just seems like yesterday.

In fact there are so many people on here, I feel like I get lost in the suffle (especially after not having Centre Ice, and having no Q prospects I relegate myself mostly to the off-topic board)

I think what happened is someone posted that Rico Fata was on waivers about three or four days after there was much discussion on it, and that poster faced the brunt of ridicule. But then it happened AGAIN, about a week after the initial incident and by that time it was hilarious in an eye-rolling kind of way.

It was coined back when Rico Fata was placed on waivers, there was something like 5 or 6 threads started about it. This was before my time, so details could be wrong, but didn't the mods get upset, merged the threads, and from that point on if someone started a thread about a topic already underway they were given the shame of the "Fata"
The story was that Rico Fata was put on waivers when Chuck Kobasew made the team (thus the threads that Rico Fata was on waivers) but when the Flames couldn't come to an agreement wiht Kobasew and Kobasew was sent back to Kelowna, there was confusion whether or not Fata was on waivers, thus multiple threads if Rico Fata was on waivers.

Then, one day, a duplicate thread was posted and Cowperson replied "Rico Fata on waivers" and you know how these things grow on CP.

That pretty much never gets old.

The only thing I really don't get is why Rico Fata is dressed like Spiderman.

(though he does have a superhuman lack of hockey sense.... :/)

There was a dancing Spiderman gif floating around the internet a while back. I would guess it was easier to put Fata's head onto it than to create a new one from scratch.

The spiderman gif came up at one point in a game thread years ago. It kept popping up randomly throughout the game thread and I believe Kobasew won the game, so I first put Kobasew's head on the gif and it took off from there.
