And an hour and a quarter later another tornado is bearing down on Greensburg and the neighboring town of Haviland which is housing many of the Greensburg folks.
Unreal.

25 minutes later...
Tornado on the ground in the city of Great Bend.
Much larger town than those affected last night. Population over 15,000. They are saying it's a glancing blow and not a direct hit. Hopefully less serious than what happened last night.
Storms are continuing to build and following roughly the same lines they did last night.

Greensburg in the path of a new tornado for the second time this evening. This is unbelievable.
And it looks like the town of Haviland where many of the Greensburg people are sheltered are about to get hit head on.

Large 1/2 mile wide tornado in or near the town of Macksville. Macksville was hit last night.
The weather guys are mentioning that they are having to check the date stamp on their national weather service bulletins to make sure they aren't from last night because it's like deja vu.
This is insane.

I can't even keep up anymore.
Two large wedge tornadoes on the ground approaching St. John....and two more approaching Great Bend again.
Cool like KevanGuy. Those guys have balls.

Thanks for the links, KG. Can't beat local coverage in severe weather situations. It seems the folks in Kansas are far more sane than the ones in Oklahoma. I went on a few storm chases when I was going to OU, and you'd see news helicopters flying fairly close to supercells. There's a good idea.
This is an historic outbreak, definitely rivaling May 3, 1999...here's hoping we don't see anything rivaling the Moore/OKC tornado. Hope you stay safe, Dis.

Thanks...we're ok. Well east of the action.
I remember that day very well. That stuff continued up into Kansas and we were in the basement that night. Had one on the ground off and on until about half a mile SW of where we lived at the time. Killed a couple of people in the suburb of Haysville.
I had occasion to drive through Moore the next week on the way to visit my Grandfather in Kingston, OK. It was horrific.
OU is the epicenter of storm chasing. Who were you accompanying?

Law enforcement reports a tornado in Trousdale. They were hit last night as well.
Multiple reports of large tornado approaching Ellinwood. You guessed it, hit last night.

While I'd like to say I was accompanying Howie Bluestein, it was no one significant. Grad students, fellow classmates - just unofficial stuff for the fun of it.
Very frustrating business whenever you miss a storm, because there's always something you think back to. Case in point, my last chase was with my non-meteorology major roommate. It was just a "slight" warning day from the SPC forecast, but things started firing pretty close to Norman, and after some debating, we took off like a bat out of hell.
We were heading into the boonies, so we needed to buy a road map, and naturally a couple of packs of cigs. Plus, I had to get some gas. And, needless to say, the cell we were chasing had dissipated (for all intents and purposes - no more tornadoes that day) about five minutes before we arrived.
Damn you, nicotine addiction!

Aerial photos of Greensburg.
This puts the damage in the proper perspective.

Oh my God. And to think, those pictures were likely taken yesterday before the town was hit again. Unreal. I sincerely hope casualties are kept to a minimum.

Our turn!
Tornado watch until 6 PM. Tornado on the ground about 40 miles SW of us moving NE.
Looks like it's going to go well West of us though. Going to be an interesting afternoon.

Good gosh I hope it misses you Dis! Hitting a city the size of Wichita, I hate to think of the fatalities that could be in that scenerio.
My Dad is just NE of Tulsa, I have been keeping an eye on his weather too. So far so good.

Are you more towards Dodge City Dis? Or the other way sort of more East?
Either way...stay safe man, looks like a whole lot more of what occurred yesterday and Friday night.
Brutal stuff.
