Oh - don't get me wrong - I dislike the comic version. I enjoyed the set up they gave him in this movie and was disappoionted at how the character was just thrown away. I would have preffered this to have been a movie with just Spider-Man, Harry and Venom with the Sandman stuff cut out and ... well ... suffice to say, not the same ending.

The thing that got me was that the first two Spiderman movies were about a common man/kid who couldn't fit in no matter what he did. The character was relateable to most, if not everyone who watched. This one put Parker on a pedistal and took away that magic connection that was there for the first two.
By taking that away, and trying to mash 16 different storylines, this movie lost me.
I'm of the 'Venom was awesome, but under utilized' camp. Who better to introduce to a storyline where the main character has self worth issues? Someone who knows everything about him, and can use that against him. Venom could have been the focus of this movie, but was far from it.
The wedding/harry/emo clusterpoop was horrible. In the comics and in the cartoons, when Parker aquires the symbiote, he has an edge, a coolness factor. Not in his mind, but in reality. I thought they dropped the ball trying to explain this part. Emo was not the way to go, and neither was the Monty Python-esk/Staying Alive sequence. Horrible.
And they had J. Jonah Jamieson's son in the 2nd one... why couldn't he have brought the symbiote back instead of the random metiorite. And since when did the Sandman fly?
I think they could have split up the four main storylines. MJ/Sandman and Harry/Venom. Venom deserved more than 20 minutes of the movie IMO. And the audience needs to relate to Parker, and I found that tough considering every 5 minutes he was feeling a different emotion in a different situation. It's like his emotions were working on the Calgary weather system.
Is it worth while to go and see. Sure. It was entertaining at points. You could always laugh at the Claire Daines - Romeo and Juliet death scene cry fest. I sure did. But it doesn't deserve to be put on the same map as the other two.
Better rental I'd say.

Sandman is such a dumb villain, they should have just had him around to be brutally murdered and to really show how evil the "evil" spider-man could be.
All that sobbing and angst and emotion crap really bothered me... sure you need some, but this was way over the top.
Venom needed a whole movie... while they built up Eddie Brock (Jr), they didn't build up Venom at all.
Worst one of the three, though because I like having complete series, will probably end up in my DVD collection one day.

And for those that are discussing the necessities of the fourth movie: Word on the street is that there won't be a fourth, the actors are not willing to sign up for a new flick in angst for type casting...
Ironically, I've never been sold by the casting of Toby and Kirsten.

I didnt say it wasn't good, nor bad, in fact I havent seen it.
just pointing out the fact that its the biggest grossing movie in its first week and day....of all time. That's significant no matter the quality of the film.

I'm willing to bet there will be a fourth. Even if the current cast does not return, they'll probably cast someone else for the roles. There's no way Sony's not gonna milk this franchise for all it's worth.

I have a feeling at least Tobey Maguire will be back, Sony'll drive the dumptruck of money to him. Sam Raimi is definitely done though... he's the main reason why this movie was very mediocre (doesn't like Venom, clearly fell prey to X-Men syndrome). Kirsten Dunst is not outstanding by any means and can easily be replaced by another blue eyed actress with half decent acting chops. (Its too bad Bryce Dallas Howard played Gwen Stacy, cause she's definitely got that girl next door look).
There's no way there won't be a Spiderman 4, just like an X-Men 4, and a Superman sequel are on the way too... even if the plots were average, they still make profits. Until they crap the bed with a Batman and Robin type disaster, they will continue.

Great points Prototype, couldn't have worded it better myself.
Venom should have had his own movie, tormenting Peter Parker as a person, and torturing Spiderman as Venom.
Sandman, I thought he was a pylon in the movie. His character was never deverloped, and got 7 minute intervals of different personalities seperated by half an hour of movie. First, he's bad and breaks out. Then, he has a daughter and is a family man trying to do his best. Then he's just a guy looking to get his life back. Then he's vengful against Peter Parker. Then, he's sorry and flies off... given about 30 minutes of screen time, tops.
FYI Spiderman 4 is expected to come out in 2009. The characters all say that they'll come back depending on the storyline, and I wouldn't mind that at all. Yeah Venom was butchered, but the first two were great and I'll give Raimi the benefit of the doubt (guess he really hated Venom); although it could by hypothesized that Raimi wanted ot get Venom in to leave his "legacy" to all Spiderman fans (as a result, didn't really do himself a favour). I'm just hoping to dear god that its not Lizard and Raven (I absolutely dispise Raven). Note that the door is left open as some of the symbiote is left in Doc Conners lab, leading way to either Carnage or the Lizard.

There is no X4, the producer already said its over at X3. However, there is a branch-off movie Wolverine telling the backstory of Wolverine and Sabretooth in 2008.
Spiderman 4 is set for 2009.

I haven't been able to find this interview but Sam Raimi did say he was leaving things open if someone else wanted to take over the franchise.
One of the things I noticed was the introduction of Dr. Curt Connors who becomes Lizard.
Another one is the introduction of the symbiote which opens the door to fan favorite Carnage.
Of course in the comics Sandman becomes a hero for a while before being brainwashed. So that's there for the writers to play with.

I haven't watched Spiderman 3 yet because I didnt' want to deal with all the craziness of first weekend openings. But did they really butcher the Venom character? Man, he was the character I was most hyped up about seeing cuz he's always been my fav character. I even have the original Venom comics. Now I'm a little wary of the movie. I'll still go see it though.

I wouldn't go as far as to say he was butchered but they didn't do him justice. The character of Eddie Brock was introduced too late in the movie.

Lets not forget that there are movie theators thats are continually constructed, meaning records are broken every couple movies.

It needed more Venom. They almost could have made two movies out of this, one dealing with the Parker story line and the other dealing with Venom. They didn't do the character justice, that was my beef. My biggest beef and this might be a bit of a spoiler depending on how you look at it so stop reading now................. was that Venom didn't say us once, always just refered to himself as one. In the comics/cartoon Venom always refered to himself as two people, Brock and the symbiot (sp). It really took away from the character I thought.
Bah... I got what I wanted, closure, but I was just hoping the inbetween part would be a bit better. I am not disapointed, but I still think 1 and 2 were much better. I hope for four he just goes back to basics, Spiderman Vs Dr. Connors or something similar, one villian is enough. Sadly the door is open for more than a few. Yes there is still some symbiote for Carnage, and yes there is a chance Lizard could emerge but also in Spiderman 2 John Jameson is introduced who becomes Man-Wolf in the comics. In Spiderman 1 Dr. Mendel Stromm is also introduced who becomes Gaunt. But as we've seen in this movie they aren't to worried about introducing the villiens ahead of time so its pretty much up in the air who the next one(s) will be.
For those curious here is a list of potentials: Chameleon, Vulture, Lizard, Electro, Mysterio (I think this would be a good choice for 4, lots of potential here since MJ is trying to be an actress, Mysterio starts out as a special effects guy), Kraven, Alistar Smythe, Rhino, Shocker, Kingpin (god knows why this guy isn't in the movies yet), Jackal, Hydro-man, Carnage, Morlun and possibly Doppleganger, although thas getting a little deep.

I've heard that Micheal Clarke Duncan is looking for work.
I'd love to see Rhino personally.

Just because another crappy movie butchered the character doesn't mean he couldn't be in the Spiderman series. He was a main character through out a lot of the comic books as well for Spiderman. He should have been introduced long ago IMO.

I probably read it wrong... or the dumb site I was reading called the Wolverine movie X-Men 4. I still wouldn't be surprised to see a fourth one in a new trilogy in a few years.

I was thinking the same thing. It's too bad that Daredevil was butchered. Had this not been so, the doors would have been opened for a Spiderman/Daredevil crossover movie. Peter Parker & Matt Murdoc were pretty good friends in the comics afterall.
