So 'orientated' is the old/proper english way and 'oriented' the new American way? I use orientated, but i also work in the health region, lol...

When you are a new employee and you use the later, where are you going? An Oriention? I know i go to an orientation....

I almost always use the British/Canadian way over the American way...

Had a similiar discussion at work after someone (an American) corrected my use of the word 'enquiry' as a spelling mistake. Where as i have always thought of 'inquiry' as a specific investigation (IE: I inquired further...) and 'enquiry' as a more passive investigation (IE: Please enquire here...). At the very least i have thought of them as interchangable...

I go to orientations to become oriented.

If I've got an adaptation, I've adapted...not adaptated.

If you could become un-adaptated (disorietated), would it be dis-adaptated or dis-adapted? Likely Dis-adaptated?

Orient is the root word, not Orientate. Thus, orienteering, not orientateering.

You're just adding an extra syllable for no reason.

I side with the "-tated", but it might depend on the context. It's hard to tell what you say when you're not thinking about it. I definitely say "disorientated".

I've never really noticed that there were two ways to say it.
