I don't like the death penalty because it precludes any chance whatsoever for redemption. You never know when someone might turn their life around and contribute something important. I know I am a very different person than I was 10 years ago. Many of you probably are too.

Compassion and the opportunity for rehabilitation is both the sign, and the goal of an enlightened society IMO.
But where do you draw the line? Does some one like Ted Bundy deserve a chance at rehabilitation? What could he possibly contribute to society that would make up for all the horrible, unspeakable crimes he committed?

I can't see the future any more than you can. But if he is alive, there is still a chance.

Still Alive?

Take a look at some of the monsters out there. Maybe your opinion on capital punishment would change.

People who are against the death penalty aren't so because they don't know there are crazies out there.

People who are against the death penalty are one thing, people who think you can rehabilitate serial killers to be normally functioning members of society are another.

Yes, I'm against the death penalty but some should be locked up an thrown away the key. I'm against it, because I don't think anybody should be lowered to the same level as the murderer. On the other hand we are way too lenient in Canada with our murder sentencing. There has to be some value placed on the victim's life instead of all the focus being placed on the perp's rehabilitation.

I agree.

Understandable that this debate has turned from methods used to execute people, to throwing out the death penalty and implementing longer prison sentences.

Which is something I agree with. But some people deserve to be shot.

I think people need to look at both sides. Like 8 ball said, being agaisnt capital punishment is one thing. But to think that a horrible monster bent on killing woman for his own personal satisfaction. Without any hint of remorse. Can contribute to society in some meaningful way if he is given a chance at rehabilitation. Is insane.

People can form their own opinions. I beleive in capital punishment in some instances. For those that are against capital punishment. Maybe take a look at some of the horrible people out there who have been executed. See it from the victims, and the victims familys point of view. If you had a daughter that disapeared, and you didn't know what happened to her for years. Then it comes to light that some sicko savagedly beat and raped her. Then hacked her up and discarded her like garbage. Your outlook may be a little differant.

Again, I'm not against it because I "haven't had a look at some of the horrible people". I don't have my head in the sand here. I watch the news. I know who Bill Curtis is. I'm pretty sure I know just as much about crime and dastardly people as every other average person.

And obviously my outlook would be different if someone killed my daughter. Of course I'd want that guy to pay for it dearly. I'd also want the guy who stole my bike to be beaten with a rubber hose. But victim's revenge isn't taken into consideration, and nor should it be.
