The big thing is the signal remains digital and uncompressed all the way to the TV. The advantage with digital is it is either on or off- so no chance for interference unless it is severe enough to cause a complete loss.

HDMI is the best way to send your signals to their destination; so try to use it whenever you can.

The Onkyo 790 IIRC has 4 component inputs (almost as good as HDMI) with 3 optical audio ports (and a coaxial audio input)...long story short it isn't bleeding edge but is still really capable and for $350 US? Fourgheddabout it

ok well after doing a bit more research, and not finding any HTIB to my liking i've decided to up my budget a bit and go for component. thinking of matching this receiver with these speakers. Harman Kardon seem to be one of the best bang for the buck companies out there, and i've read nothing but good reviews from both these products. hopefully i can pick them up either this weekend or next as long as i don't change my mind again

While the receivers are good, I'd go with a Canadian company like Energy, Axiom, Paradigm, or PSB for speakers. As well, this company gets really good reviews on audioreview.com and the price is killer:

well just bought my stuff today. ended up getting the Harman Kardon AVR147 receiver instead of the more expensive AVR345, as it does everything i need and some things i want (like HDMI switching). and instead of the Harman Kardon speaker package i instead went with the Polk RM6750 setup. listened to both side by side and was much more impressed with the sound from the Polk's. all in all i managed to stay within my budget and get a level of sound quality that will be just right for my setup
