While Calgary has a transit system that just can't keep up with the city's remarkable growth (and i'll give it credit for that), it clearly has to be one of the most dinosaur-era train systems existing on the planet today. For a city of over 1 million people and having one of the largest metropolitan areas in North America, it's completely inexusable. Tokyo should have been rater higher than Calgary on this fact alone - the city has over 29 PRIVATE COMPANIES operating their train system, so public transit there is a god-send. And Calgary as the cleanest city in the world? That's pretty disappointing if that's the case - this world just seems to be getting dirtier the more we pollute it. I'm shocked that we are the cleanest city, that just doesn't clue in given the constant mud, dirt, dust, and gravel that litter our streets and sidewalks....Give me a break!

And for the record, I'm not sure why Auckland, New Zealand was rated the fifth best city in the world this year. I just lived there for a while, and I can say that while it is nice and green, it is rampant with gang activity, is somewhat dirty, and has a lack of urban culture similar to Calgary's problems.

If I had my choice, Brisbane or Tokyo would be waaaay up there before Auckland or Calgary.

Well you can tell the pollution of a city by the color of your snot. Hmmm mine always turn black when I visit Hong Kong. hehe

Are you kidding me? Maybe you dont understand what short bus ride is - under 20 minutes - i bet 90% of the city can get to the ctrain via a bus in under 20 minutes.

I guess I would disagree. I'm trying to think of when I might have lived within 20 minute bus ride of a C-Train station. (And I moved around a lot when I was a renter.)

Part of the problem in that the bus routes do go to the C-train stations. Which is fine of you are going to a Flames game or downtown, but if you want to visit a friend it is a bus, then train, then bus again.

Go visit any major American city on the Eastern Seaboard and youll see a real show. Philly and Washington, although having some absolutely gorgeous areas, are two of the dirtiest cities Ive ever seen in my life(with Washington topping the list).

Yep. Philly is a great city but it's filthy.

I might be the only one, but I think Vancouver has got the best transit system I've used (including Calgary's).

B-Line buses that come every 5-10 mins on the major routes where there is no SkyTrain. SkyTrain that comes what feels like every 3 minutes, so never a long wait (I can remember waiting 15mins + for a Ctrain on those cold windy platforms). I also like the SkyTrain's speed, 60-80kms/hr between the stations compared to the Ctrain at 40-50kms/hr. Always bugged me too that the Ctrain stops every 400m downtown and has to wait at intersections.

The trolley's here can suck though, especially when the lines come off the power. Less exhaust fumes though.
