I can't say I've done detailed research, but I can confirm I've seen it "corrupt the IP stack". This can be seen when switching from a direct external IP address to a private NATted address. Of course, not everyone will be doing that routinely at home, so it may not be a concern for them. And if you are behind a router, I doubt ZoneAlarm provides much value to the regular home user.
Another vote for OppenOffice. The last time I used it on Windows, it was a bit of a resource hog, but if you have a bunch of RAM you should be fine. However, if you often collaborate on Docs with MS Office users, and make use of some advanced features and formatting, you will run in to conversion problems. For soliatry use, it is fine, an $0 is a good price.
