hahaha. i was going to post the exact same thing earlier. Chinese buffet for westerners is retribution for the slave labor in building the railroad.
Of course if you ever had Chinese buffet in Toronto you would never feel the same way. All you can eat peking duck and sashimi too. All you can eat mango ice cream is good too.
Too bad it takes like 2 hours to get a table even with a reservation.

Yeah but in the chinese all you can eat buffets in Toronto(actually scarborough) it's all you can eat sashimi and sushi too. And the pieces are hugomungus!!
It's also about 3 times the size of Calgary's largest buffet.

Personally, I've never really liked Chinese fast food at all, but thats mainly because I'm Chinese myself and accustomed to actual Chinese food. Real Chinese food aren't meant to be greasy and stuff like the fast food is and if you only eat fast food, then u're not exposed to the food that actual Chinese people eat.
|
Yeah, you're probably right. I always get the bs and ps mixed up. then again, I'm a malaysian chinese. When we speak cantonese or mandarin, it differs greatly from how people in china or hk speaks. I remember confusing some hk friends of how I pronounced certain words.

After living out in Vancouver for a few years, I'm horribly dissapointed by the quality of Chinese food in Calgary. There are a few decent places, but generally it is quite poor. Even Chinese people I know frequently complain about the dearth of good quality, reasonably priced Chinese food in Alberta
Again, if you're ever in Vancouver and have a few extra bucks to spend (and you love Chinese food), "Kirin" is probably one of the premiere dim sum places in North America.

Hah my fiance and her folks are from Tianjin (northeastern China) and the way they cook is super salty. Like has been mentioned, the different regions of China have different food qualities, some salty, some sour, some sweet, etc.
I have to say though, NE Chinese food is gosh darn deilicious and I thank my lucky stars every time I get to eat dinner over there.
Egg drop soup (all forms) makes me weep with happiness...ditto for boiled cabbage.

Really?? I find the food in, how do you say, hot-pot, to be really really bland. Or at least the food starts off really bland, and towards the end, everything tastes the same because it's all be stewing in the same broth.
As for the article; it's laughably misleading. A plate of 6 dumplings is meant for 6 people, not 1; One whole plate of veggies is also meant to be shared among several people, which is why the calorie content is inflated.
Regardless of which restaurant you visit, there will be some foods that are unhealthy for you, and some healthier food choices. Discretion is up to the consumer.

Actually the soup is suppose to be pretty healthy for you. I seldom eat hot pot at restaurants anyway. It's better if you just head to t&t supermarket and get your stuff there.
And hotpot can be pretty bland...if you don't know about the various yummy soups of course You can probably find the soup ingredients on the net, or even purchase them at t&t I believe. Oh, not to mention the many sauces for your meat...holy crap, my mouth is watering just thinking about it.

My only complaint is that you smell like Pho after you eat Pho for the rest of the day.
Sunny's had the best soup before they changed owners. They didn't use any msg so you weren't thirsty as hell after eating it.

Yeah, the MSG is pretty bad unless you're eatiing pho in Vietnam... and also the fat is pretty high in the broth... but having said that, the other food like the rice wraps are super healthy.
EDIT: Interesting fact #1: KG used to love pho, but never eats it anymore because he gets hungry like an hour after eating an XL LOL.

I'm a big fan of the almond chicken myself. When you bite in and feel the 6 month old deep fryer grease exploding in your mouth. How can that be bad for you?
