That was odd, and it should end up costing JD Watt, as fighting after the conclusion of a game is an automatic suspension.

Yeah, there were a few suspensions last week, the same thing happened between Spokane and Everett... Watt was all over the ice last night: big hits, and a beauty pass on Vancouver's first goal..

And apparently he is pissing off even Giants fans with his childish antics, at least that is the comments from some on whlfans. I like what he can do on the ice, but Watt really, really needs to grow up in some respects. He is one of the poorest winners in the WHL right now.

Can't agree with you more Snakeeye.. I go to quite a few Giants games, even though I'm a *cough cough* Ice fan, but Watt really seems to have a bit of an attitude problem. He's a good skater, when he wants to be, and has a mean streak, but kind of reminds me of a Rasheed Wallace-type guy out there: takes the odd dumb penalty, yaps, but still contributes. Kind of guy you don't mind having on your team but hate playing against.

Kootenay, 4-0. Seems that Calgary couldnt match the desperation of hte Ice.

Game six is massive. I can't imagine they will win a game 7 in Cranbrook, so Monday night is key.

Good win tonight for the Ice, and nice to see a larger crowd than the first two games..

Two other series ended tonight. Brandon knocked off Prince Albert 4-2 to win their series 4-1. And Seattle pulled off the upset, spanking Carey Price and Tri-City 7-2 to win that series in 6.

EDIT: Just looked at the gamesheets from tonight, attendance in Cranbrook was 3,709. Seattle only drew 3,082! Gotta wonder if their move rumors are true...

Yeah the Hitmen were really only good in the first 10 minutes of the game or so and than after that it was the Ice who controlled the game.

First round of the playoffs is usually down for many teams as season tickets are done, and there are no group sales. The Hitmen get around this by offering the first two games of the playoffs as part of the season ticket package.

As far as Seattle goes, last I heard there was a push to get a junior sized arena built in Kent (iirc). The success of the Silvertips has led to a belief that the Tbirds could succeed in the suburbs.

That's what I've heard too, a 6 or 7,000 seater, like EEC or the Save on Foods Centre in Victoria.

WOW!! Once again the Hitmen tie it up in the 3rd period. This is great hockey. 3-3 about 7min. left.

I really feel bad for the Hitmen. To have the winning goal scored against them immediately after an absolute joke of a penalty expired after fighting so hard to get back int he game has to be crushing. It absolutely baffles me how two referees as grossly incompetent as Herman and Rehman are are allowed to call such a pivotal game. I simply cannot believe White was penalized for having his stick held. And that was right in the middle of a sequence where the referees locked themselves into a bad call-make up call-bad call-make up call situation. Hell, Kootenay was penalized twice tonight for good defense. The WHL seriously needs to look at the quality of its officiating. These weren't rookies out there calling their first major junior games. These were two veterans who have been a problem for years now.

That said, there is no reason why this game should ever have gotten to the point where the zebras directly influenced the outcome. I have no idea what Michael Stone was thinking, but his complete laziness cost us the first goal, and just destroyed his teammates hard work through the first 23 minutes. Stone was benched the rest of the 2nd, and with good reason.

And then there is Kisio. A mediocre general manager who has decided to be a mediocre head coach. He just sits there, watches his team just die on the ice after that goal, and does nothing. No pep talk, no time out, no effort to rally the troops. Next shift: goal. Still he sits there like an idiot. Penalty, penalty, goal. Still nothing.

The Hitmen will remain the same mediocre franchise they have been for several years until somebody in the Flames office takes notice and replaces Kisio. We have one of the best fanbases in Canada, and we deserve a hell of a lot better than Kelly Kisio.

Didn't watch the game tonight (yet), but from your post Snakeeye, the Ice caught a bit of a break tonight?

My thoughts on the Hitmen... I really grew to dislike them during the Brendl, Moran, Beech et al era, but it completely baffles me that they have had such difficulty closing out series in the last few years. Love the rivalry though, as well as KTN/RD a few years back.. It's nice to see the Ice back in the Central even though it means they won't be hitting the West Coast as frequently (this year they played at Chilliwack but not at Vancouver, go figure)..

Anyways, here's to an epic seventh game Wednesday.

This loss cant be good. The Hitmen are in the process of choking. Its really unfortunate considering how they controlled the game.

I'd bet on an uninspired Game 7 effort. Last year they were up 3-1 and lost with a crappy game 7, same the year before.

It sucks to watch a team that can't close out a series.

They did and they didn't, if that makes sense. There were bad calls on both sides, but the Ice were able to score late on one of the calls against Calgary.

So while they recieved a "break" on the game winner, Calgary also had plenty of chances to take advantage of the calls as well.

Yes and no. The Ice were wildly outplayed in the first and third periods, but Dakers made a number of excellent stops that kept his team alive. I would suggest that your skaters caught a break, and that they owe their playoff lives to their goaltender. If not for Dakers, Calgary would have beaten Kootenay silly last night.

The officiating was what one expects when Pee Wee Herman and Kyle Rehman officiate a game. They are both up there with Savage as far as the worst officials in the league go. Especially Herman, who would be a Mick McGeough clone if he got a bad haircut, added 100lbs and flailed his arms about wildly at random times. He has that same "I'm the first star" mentality. The game could just have easily gone Calgary's way on one of the other horrible calls those two made last night. Kootenay was simply fortunate in the timing of their goal.

Ultimately though, it has to fall back on Kelly Kisio. The Hitmen have been a mediocre organization since he took over as GM, and in his three years as a coach, he is now working hard on his third embarrassing playoff choke in a row. I seriously have to wonder if the Flames are even paying attention to the Hitmen for him to have lasted as long as he has. The team can brag about ten straight playoff appearances all it wants, in a league where 4/5 teams in each division qualify, that is not much of an accomplishment.
