I've had this situation a few times for various reasons and the airlines, including AC, have always tried to be extremely accomodating to help us. The one time when we didn't have any luck we had no problem having an individual move seats to enable us to sit together. In fact we had a few people who offered up their seats. I'm willing to bet that the majority of people travelling alone would have no problem helping you out.
