Well I am posting this from a live CD on an G5 iMac. The fans are going full blast and it's kind of annoying. I'll try and istall it to a firewire hard drive and play around with it. Gimp and open office all running off a cd. Very cool.

Have you tried it through parallels on your MBP Teamchachi?

I've messed around with Ubuntu under Parallels. Works fine.

You do realize that you can just set a password for the root account right?

The biggest problem with Windows is the fact that everything runs with admin privileges. If they had implemented something along the lines of sudo in Ubuntu then Windows wouldn't be such a security nightmare.

I think you'll find that Canonical (the company behind Ubuntu) is building some pretty big relationships with the major Linux application vendors. You are likely to be seeing a lot more of Ubuntu than you might think.

Just because you can build it from source, doesn't mean you should...

Having said that, the reason that I love FreeBSD as a server OS is the fact that I can easily build the latest and greatest versions of apps like Spamassassin, ClamAV, etc. instead of waiting for binary packages a la Debian.

I wanted to bring this back after reading the pop-ups thread..

I installed Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn) on my laptop at home and holy hell is it awesome. You really don't have to use the terminal at all for it, it's got a revamped network manager that supports WPA immediately and all administrative/keyring stuff is dead easy.

The only thing that sucks is that my graphics card is nVidia so ubuntu has to use proprietary drivers and they don't work 100%. I only need those drivers for openGL support which I want for what I am about to say.

BUT.. doing this makes it all worth while

open terminal

sudo apt-get install beryl beryl-manager emerald-themes

Your desktop will never be the same again. It's amazing. Someone, anyone, just give it a try. It's like pimp my window manager.

The nvidia drivers are fairly easy to get.. IIRc they're in the multiverse repository (its been a while since I've actually had to get them).

Ubuntu gets them for me.. the thing is they aren't very reliable. For example my display locks up when I try to suspend the computer.

It gets drivers for my GForce Go 7400 that are clearly written by nVidia. Beryl uses openGL acceleration, so it needs the drivers to run. If I don't use the nVidia drivers then it works perfectly

i like Linux, experimented with every distro under the sun (still prefer MEPIS over any other, even Ubuntu) but for my everyday use it just can't compete with windows, mainly because of the lack of support for many programs. i like the programs i use often and don't feel like trying to switch to the Linux alternatives (especially TVersity, which i use to stream movies to my xbox 360), and being that i play quite a few games it's annoying to always have to switch back and forth if you dual boot

i hope it continues to gain popularity and can eventually rival windows for desktop use, but until that happens it's more of a hinderance for me to use it than a plus

Occasionally I boot from CD with BackTrack and I find it far less frustrating then Windows.

I agree. Beryl rules my workspace. I'm not ashamed to admit that I've wasted more than a minute or two just swinging windows and the desktop "cube" around. Surprisingly stable too.

I tried to burn the Ubuntu ISO on three different CDs and got the Boot CD Error every time I tried to install. The ISOs came from different downloads, both torrent and http.

Anyone else had this problem? I am using Easy CD creator 5.

Not sure. I downloaded the iso from the website and burned it with roxio I think. You could try another program though. There's a free program for burning disks http://www.cdburnerxp.se/
