Seems foolish not to be plowing and sanding all the main roads immediatley after (or even during if it gets like this) a snowfall. Traffic is bad enough without the roads being slippery...

I think this year has been an anomoly.
Yes, they should be plowing the main roads, the roads that get the most traffic immediately. But leave the side roads until the plows/sanders can get to them.
Usually in calgary, if it snows, it is gone in a few days. On top of that, I haven't seen this much snow on the ground in calgary in a very very long time (abnormal march dumps are not included in this).
The majority of this snow will probably be gone by friday/saturday.

For sure. One of the biggest problems right now is that the dnump truck "plow/sander" combos come and blade off the snow and leave just a thin enough layer to become ice. They'll never plow and sand a sidestreet at the same time which I think causes more problems than not. Maybe its because I have a 4x4 truck, but snow provides 100x more traction than the ice does.

It's tough, and everyone is in such a damn hurry to get somewhere that they pound the throttle and turn everything into ice. brutal.

I think more gravel is required personally. I've been on some clean roads that if they had more gravel on them would be ALOT safer. I pretty much slid through a yield turn yesterday going 15km/h if there was a car to yeild to I would've had no chance.

It doesn't matter what the city does, there will always be idiots who drive too fast for the conditions. If people adjusted their speed according to the conditions you wouldn't see high number of accidents we see reported after a snowfall.

plow every side street? wow, here in Lethbridge we are lucky to see sand on the roads. I think our overall snowfall budget is around 500k for the YEAR. It doesn't take much to use up that ****y amount

There's not much snow in Japan. That thing would either get stuck or run over by a real snowplow!

I still can't believe they don't salt the streets here, like they do in Ontario. There's a lot more hills here, and the streets could be clearer in a lot shorter time.

The philosophy for snow clearing here seems to be, "Wait for a chinook-it'll be any day now!"

The difference is that it snows here when it's -20 out, which is below the temperature at which salt is effective. It's usually a lot closer to freezing when there's a big dump of snow in Ontario.

The Goon^ doesnt that have to do with the fact that below -10 (or something) salt actually doesnt melt the ice?

I'd rather have more sand that salt. You should see all those rusted out cars in Ontario from all that salt they use.

Very true.

If you buy a used car here try and be sure it didn't come from out east or you may have salt issues.

The city is just as strapped for workers and cash as any private company. I'm sure Calgary would love to add more snowplows and sanders to their fleet, but who would run them? People opt for private companies more and more because city jobs are starting to not be able to compete salary wise.

I wasn't aware of the ineffectiveness of salt at lower temperatures. That makes sense, then.

As far as the rusting of cars go, I'd rather that than sliding through an intersection and getting t-boned.

I moved to High River a few years back and all they use is sand here. No problems of drivers sliding through intersections.

We can never win this argument. People are selfish. They want cheap gas and low taxes and all of their neighbourhoods and their roads to be cleaned and sanded so that THEY can get to school or work quickly. The hell with everyone else.

Nobody runs for mayor or alderman anymore. Everyone's in the private sector making the big buck.
