Wow, I am very surprised at these results. In my experience, "Phoning it in" is more common. I've kind of always associated the term with performers, e.g. musicians. The performance was so off, it's like they could have been sitting on their couch at home on the phone to give a performance of the same effect. Maybe I'm way off, it happens.

I'm surprised too! That's very odd. I've only heard of "phoning it in". Whenever I watch sitcoms or late night TV it's like you know.
Jon Stewart: "We're totally phoning it in today"
Mailing is slow, phoning it in means you are lazy and just sort of calling your employees or secretary or boss and doing your job pathetically from home or being lazy in bed.
I'm 100% certain the more common idiom is "phoning it in" despite everything this forum says.

I'm totally certain it's phoning it in though. I guess both exist. I've heard mail it in on sports more and phone it in on comedy shows or talk shows.

I hear "mailing" way more often than "phoning".

I've actually heard both, but suspect, based on the results, Mail It In is the original expression.
Maybe it should now be fax it in, e-mail it in, or IM it in.

That's pretty bold of you.
The results of this thread also match the results on google (by a lot), so I'm not sure how you can claim "phone" is more common. Atleast not 100%

I can't recall ever hearing of "phoning it in" before this poll. It's definitely "mailing it in".

I've heard both, eqaully often. I think edn88. It may be an old saying 'mail it in' and became phone it in after time as phones became more commonplace.
Obviouslly both mean half-assed, probably the fact that you aren't there 'on site' your putting in effort from the comfort of somewhere else.

I've heard both. Since both is not an option in the poll, I just won't vote. However, I think using mail is more common.

I like texting it in, or emailing it; sometimes texting takes a while.

It's funny how all the old timers are saying they've never heard of phoning it in.
