He would have been way better off to just let Colbert be his character and play it straight, rather than trying to "pin him down" as a "secular progressive." To be honest the funniest part of the whole night was the clip from the Conan O'Brien show where Colbert was demanding an apology from the family of Rosa Parks, O'Brien shot him, and Colbert told him it was a typical reaction.
