i guess it depends how much of the show is good writing and how much is beating the mosque/redneck joke to death.
note that that larry david show beats the same joke to death and beyond and is considered 'successful', or at least it has a following.

naa. The best had to be the who's the funniest episode. Kenny getting Spenny to believe he might have AIDS was a classic. The episode with who can keep the octopus on their head the longest was really funny too (what friend would do that?).

I'm with you. I've seen the previews and laughed my ass off. Seems like a take on Corner Gas mixed with a Muslim comedy show. Hopefully the show will be well written and decently acted.
The thing I find really odd though is all the hype (on CNN??). It's been done before with Mexicans, Blacks and Gays/Lesbians. If they can be funny, why are a bunch of wise cracking Islamic comedians news? Politically correct people need to loosen their panties I think.

CNN had something about it? Are you saying there are "Politically Correct" that are upset about this show?
If that is the case, then it isn't "CBC's new venture into political correctness"?
Can we have somebody from the PC police chime in and let us know if you are trying to force something on the public or are righteously indignant? A little clarification, please.

Well apparently its had a lot of airplay per se. From Hoz's Globe article,
has attracted media attention from around the globe. The sitcom has been written up in The Los Angeles Times, The Jerusalem Post, London's Daily Telegraph and The New York Times. Recently, CNN came calling, visiting the west-end Toronto set where the lion's share of the first eight episodes have been shot.
And from this article:
http://othernews.ca.myway.com/articl.../37981024.html
CNN will run a small segment on "Paula Zahn Now" on Thursday at 8 p.m., just hours after "Little Mosque" publicists hand out more 100 kilograms of free halal chickens in downtown Toronto to promote the show.
"Little Mosque on the Prairie," a comedy about Muslims trying to interact with their small-town neighbours in a fictional Canadian prairie town called Mercy, has been receiving the kind of advance buzz that most publicity departments only dream about.
It's been written up in the New York Times, the Houston Chronicle and by The Associated Press, with Stephen Colbert, the fake late-night talk-show host, also taking notice. CNN has also done previous items on "Little Mosque."

You should have heard some family members of mine talking about it. It's so incorrect to make jokes about Islamic people apparently (regardless if it is written, acted and produced by the same).
PC is so nineties.

That pretty much sums it up. Do to location I will likely never see an episode. I am curious though as to whether it bucks the CBC crapola production habits. I am betting heavily on the not side.

Beyong the obvious title ripoff the clips I have seen on CNN it is typical CBC junk. Boring, joke are lame, people so dumb (white in particular - hey rednecks for GTA enjoyment!) that they are annoying rather than funny.
Premieres Tuesday. Anyone want to do a write-up?
|
No offense HOZ, but, like I said it hasn't even premiered here yet, and as well you may likely never be able to see it. But you were first determined to call it complete and utter junk...but now in your 2nd post you seemed to have changed your tune a bit....
(it should be noted that I think it could suck the big one or be a great surprise hit. You never know...)

Umm...no I didn't. You need to reread what I typed instead of reading into what I typed. I was commenting on what I saw.

I thought that commercial with them curling looked pretty funny...Ill probably give it a chance and watch the pilot.
Im giving it a chance because the last time I saw a Canadian comedy show come out was The Tournament, and I instantly decided it was gonna be lame and chose not to watch it. Then one day I caught the finale(was only a six episode miniseries), and I absolutely laughed my ass off, it was SO funny! I regret that I never saw the first five.

The BBC view of Little Mosque . . .
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/6244199.stm
Haven't seen it yet myself . . . . . if they take shots all around, then they'll probably be fine but I agree with others that the promos have looked fairly lame.
The plot follows a Canadian-born imam as he makes a similar move from a big city to the Saskatchewan town of Mercy (pop. 10,000), where he encounters a colourful array of characters, both in the town's Muslim and non-Muslim communities.
"It's very unusual, because usually the Imam is imported from overseas and there's often a cultural disconnect," says Ms Nawaz. "I thought it would be interesting to have an imam with Canadian cultural sensibilities having to deal with the immigrant men for a change."
Her comment that the normal practice is to bring an Imam in from overseas is interesting.
EDIT: Canadian Muslim leaders urge followers to watch Little Mosque:
http://www.thestar.com/News/article/169364
And early reviews:
Despite the buzz, however, reviews of the pilot episode, in which the community's Muslims take delight in getting their own mosque while the rednecks get nervous, have been decidedly mixed.
Vinay Menon, television critic for the Toronto Star, wrote that many of the show's jokes were lame, while the Toronto Sun's Bill Brioux called it "exceptionally unfunny."
Brad Oswald of the Winnipeg Free Press wrote that "what Little Mosque delivers with its pilot episode is an average, adequately likable situation comedy in which unconventional sitcom characters engage in completely conventional sitcom behaviour. Nothing less, but certainly nothing more."

Meh, this show may not last, but I will wait to see it before I judge it completely.
Chances are that we will have a few Muslims whining about pigeonholing or whatever and a few righties spewing their crap as well.
I think the rule of thumb is this:
-if you are Muslim who finds uncovered female hair to be titillating, you will probably not like it;
-if you get most of your news from Glenn Beck, MEMRI, etc. and find yourself spending time on Stormfront white nationalist community forums, you will probably be going around and telling everyone how much you hate the show regardless of its quality.

Well from more than a few reviews it looks like Little Mosque on the Prairie is another CBC flop.

Missed the show but I think most sitcoms take a few episodes to get in the groove.

It was pretty funny. Very Canadian. Some really cheesy jokes. My favourite part was everyone leaning in and sarcastically saying, "Please tell us how they do it in Toronto."

I liked the Canadian Idol part. It isn't anything great, but it is not that bad either, definately watchable.
HOZ seems pretty upset about it though

Based on what I've seen in the commercials, I'm going to take a pass on this show.... but then thats not too unusual for me when it comes to watching anything that CBC produces.
