Every big LCD I get interested in turns out to have problems. Just going by memory but the Sharp Aquos has banding. The Sony 2500? has backlight issues. The Samsungs have cloudiness. Maybe everybody I hear on the internet is to picky but I'm waiting.

Ooops good catch Vulcan....that is the EDTV version (TH-42P WD8UK), my bad.
I thought they had last years HDTV's as well (TH-42P HD8UK) somewhere, but they may be all sold out

Exactly. When I was at the store looking at the one I bought and the HD one next to it I could see no difference.

You're just not future proofed with an EDTV. Picture quality on an EDTV vs. an HDTV for most sources today will be identical. But you can't watch an HDTV signal on an EDTV - so it's not compaitble with most new game systems, the HD movie formats, HD programming, etc.
An EDTV is fine for right now. And it's fine if you don't plan on upgrading the other techs I mentioned anytime soon. If you are, you're better of with an HDTV compatible set now.

At the same time though I'm sure that in a few years HDTV won't work with half of the technology that will be out at the time. Then everyone will need ADTV (Awesome Def).

I have always stood by the fact that as long as the TV looks good to you, then that's all that matters.
However, now that my less geeky friends have been over a few Sundays, I found the least technical of them saying the other day "Let's switch back to the Seattle game, because that one is in 720. Right Ken?"
Yep, they can now all tell the difference between 1080i and 720p. And that is with less than 10 hours of HD TV watching.
My standpoint on EDTV has always been one that there are HD options available for the exact same price. Yes, you end up with a TV that is 12 inches deep instead of 4 inches. However you can get a much better picture with a true HD TV.

ADTV would be awesome! The point is that EDTV isn't really any kind of standard, it was coined by the industry to try and make basic features sound sexy.
But I definitely agree that if you're satisfied with it, there's nothing wrong with an EDTV. And at the same time, I can see how anyone who is at all forward looking would be quick to dismiss it.

Had a F.S. salesman point out what you are seeing on a floor model Photon. Said it was Fubarred, that the grid was polarized or something to that effect. No extended warranty, have them pick it up?

Almost all EDTV plasmas will downconvert an HD signal for display at 852 x 480 pixels. Watching an HD source on an EDTV is still a much better experience than watching standard definition signals on an HDTV.

How does a standard def signal look on an EDTV compared to an HDTV, though? Sounds like you are comparing apples to oranges here.

The way I look at EDTV is that it gives a good picture for SD broadcasts but it's generally a widescreen so in order to fill the screen you end up with a distorted picture. It's a nice piece of furniture but it's better to just have a 4x3 screen.
For future buyers,
If you want to watch SD, get a 4x3 TV
If you want to watch HD in 16x9, get an HDTV.
