I was able to do some digging around and I found that Operation Red Nose does run in Edmonton

The website is http://www.orn-edm.org if you are interested, there is forms related to volunteering on the website as well as dates and hours of operation.

My heart goes out to you Neil. Nobody should have to go through what you are going through.

For the rest of us; the important thing is to know your limits. For those of you who don't know your legal limits; there's a good chart on this page: http://www.addict-help.com/alcohol-information.htm

A few things to keep in mind about being able to drive:

- A "pint" of beer at the pub is 1.5 drinks on this chart.

- If at a house party, and you want to be socialable but still be able to drive, drink beer or something else that comes in single serving bottles. That way you can be sure that your host's generocity with his free pouring isn't getting you into trouble.

- Always know when to say no. If your buddy buys a round of shooters, and wants you to drink when you don't want to; just say no. If your friends cannot respect your wishes to not drink and drive; then they aren't friends. You don't have to say that a guy you knew lost his girlfriend to a drunk driver; just say that you cannot afford to lose your license.

- For you young adults, don't be afraid to tell your parents that you will not be bringing home the car because you are too drunk. Yes they will be mad for the moment, but they will deep down understand. Ask the parent you are closest to for help in uderstanding how much is too much to drink. I did that when I first got too drunk to drive my dad's car home at age 17, and asked for his help. He spent the next day driving around trying to get info like in the chart I just showed. (after taking a cab to go get his car.)

- If you are really in a jam, and need to get the car home, and there's no cabs or Operation Red Nose, call a tow truck. That way you get a ride home, and so does your car.

- Don't be afraid to plan your partying; and your plan to get home. Always have a backup plan as well.

Wow. My condolances to Oilfan. It amazes me that people still do this. Tis the season. What's sad is that you think you shouldn't have to post reminders like this but likely someone from this board WILL drink and drive this holiday season anyways. Don't be stupid people. There's enough pain and suffering in the world that you don't need to cause more.

My deepest condolences go out to OilFan#81. That is really tragic and infuriating.

Just last night a drunk driving story hit home for us. My brother called me at 3:30 in the morning last night in a panic because they had just been in a serious accident. A drunk driver ran a red light and ran in to them doing about 80km according to the cops. Luckily they hit the front part of the truck and not the door otherwise I don't think my Sister in law would be here today. She ended up with a concussion and a cracked pelvis. The truck is a complete write off and things could have been far worse for them.

I am just livid with the guy that hit them. It was quite a night for everyone involved especially waiting at the hospital. Luckily they walked away from it relatively unhurt but if they were even one second earlier and that guy hit them in the door they might not be here.

Please don't drink and drive.

I started an appreciation thread in this forum where my thoughts are all there. But again I really want to thank you all so much for the wishes you have sent me.

PS......Kris, that is so touching for you to do something like that. I don't even know what to say. Thank you so much.

My thoughts and feelings are going out to you Oilfan. I cannot imagine losing someone like that.

I really wish that people would just learn that drinking and driving is so stupid.
In my grade 12 year back in B.C. I lost 5 friends in 2 diffrent accidents. One was after a bonfire a close friend of mine got into a car with 2 other friends (not close friends but people I hung out with sometimes) that were drinking. They wound up driving down a mountain road and they went off the side. All 3 were killed instantly.
In another one a really close friend was out with her boyfriend who just got a new motorbike that day, they went to a party and got drunk and from what the police say, they were doing 110 in a 70 zone and hit a cement border. She was thrown off the bike and hit a telephone pole. ONce again they both died instantly.

It is so hard to bury friends that died for something so stupid. PLease do not drink and drive, not just this holiday season but ever.

This thread has me thinking about the cab waits right now in the city. Are we going to be seeing an increase in drunk driving because of it? I'm going to guess that we will indeed see more arrests this year because people won't wait for a cab or drivers alternative.

Police apparently have commented that they are worried about that this year. Plus with crime in LRT stations if you're trying to be responsible that way you may end up with your head caved in. Although those cases are still reasonably few and far between. A lot of issues seem interlaced in this city right now.

Most of you probably dont know but Oilfan#81 is a GM in the CPHL. After the news of the passing of his girlfriend due to a drunk driver this week we (in the CPHL) have decided to make a donation to MADD on his behalf.

If anyone is interested they can email money transfer to my email kfernet@shaw.ca or you can PM me for my address and mail it too me. We are really hoping the true community spirt of CP can come through on this one. A donation of any size is greatly appreciated and will help make something positive out of this tragedy.
That's a very nice thing to do on my brother's behalf. I don't live in Canada, but I would like to donate some money to this cause. I will be sending you a PM. It's a very tragic thing that happened, and thanks everyone for being there for my lil bro.

Like I said, there are lots and lots of people who want to see us ease up on drunk driving. With this, and the beer companies giving lip service to drunk driving while pandering to younger and younger teens, I don't think the problem is going away any time soon.

Those sites made me so mad that I couldn't even continue to read them. In their ignornace they can keep sweeping it under the rug, but it doesn't change the fact that innocent people are going to continue to be killed or maimed by those irresponsible enough to drink and drive. It's been happening for years and it isn't stopping.

I am very ashamed to say, but I have tested fate a couple of times in the past. Nothing to serious, but there were 2-3 occassions where I should not have driven.

After the passing of my best friends girlfriend, I will never touch my keys after a couple of drinks again.

It's brave of you to admit this at a time like this. The important thing is you've made a decision to change.

You're certainly not alone. At one time in my life, I too "tempted fate" occasionally as you put it.

People have to realize that it doesn't take much to put you over .08. Depending on the circumstances (time elapsed, amount eaten, your weight etc.) it doesn't take much. Two, three beers and you're legally impaired.
