Black Friday is NOT the busiest shopping day of the year in the US. This is a myth. It is still one of the top 5 or 10 though

The busiest shopping days is always one of the few days leading up to Christmas:

I'm not expressing an opinion on the intent of "buy nothing day," but unlike so-called "gas boycott" days, there is potentially a small impact if we assume that many of the things which would otherwise be bought are instant consumables.... coffees, lunches, etc. If I don't buy a coffee today, e.g., then I'm not going to double up on it tomorrow to compensate.

Anybody else seen the graffiti at 90th & 14th SW recently? Some jackasses painted a huge "Merry Christmass Consumption" (sic) on the sound wall.

My suggestion was that there are many, many, many people that don't give a second thought to the plight of others and are only concerned with material assets for their family, including such things as big screen HDTVs. You tell me - if a random person off the street won $10,000 would they be more likely to go buy a new TV or to hand it over to Stephen Lewis Foundation?

as for:
"to say that people who like material goods don't have social conscious is one of the most ignorant statements I have ever read on this board"

I didn't say that. But I will say something close to that. Most people put the collection of material goods far above having a social conscience. Which is what "Buy Nothing Day" is all about. Evaluating the ethical consequences of overconsumption. My point is that most people don't bother with "ethical consequences" and the impoverished third world be damned.

I am challenging everyone out there to at least try not to spend anything tomorrow - chances are you will not be able to.

It's not about feeling better for a day, although, I would be lying if I said I didn't feel better about it, but it can also be a pretty good self-learning experience. You realize that in today's day and age, how consumerism dictates our lives.

So just try it - pack a lunch to work, bring a bottle of water from home, whatever. I am going to bake cookies for the office to try and persuade others not to buy a snack... I hope I don't get fired...

The only thing I can say to that is...

I hope it doesn't hurt too bad having to bend over all the time to take it from the corporate world.

I'm not even going to try.

They could have picked any random Friday to get their point across, if all they wanted to do was get a point across. Instead the pick one of the busiest shopping days in the US. That would be like trying to tell people to not use the airlines December 23; the Saturday before Christmas.

We live in a consumer based society. I have what I consider to be a good life because of it. Something I learned a long time ago is not to poop where you eat.

Same here. Oops.

I am one of those people who will go out and buy lots of stuff today just to anger people against buying.

I guess everyone has their own cause. I choose to support my community, you choose to support third world communities.

Yep Sears Home Store has a special on freezers -- I'm picking one up tonight. Not to be anti whatever whiny day this is but I make my own decisions and I don't base them on who is whining about what lately.
